55 Motorcycles Bring Hope to Kuala Sungai Baru Explosion Victims

55 Motorcycles Bring Hope to Kuala Sungai Baru Explosion Victims

Fifty-five new motorcycles were handed over to Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru residents affected by the gas explosion to help them regain mobility and rebuild their lives, thanks to a collaboration between the Transport Ministry and Spanco.

One week ago, the people of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru woke up to devastation. A sudden gas pipeline explosion tore through their quiet community, leaving behind widespread destruction. Homes, cars, and for many residents, their only means of getting around — their motorcycles — were lost in the fire.

Today, under the warm morning sun at Putra Heights LRT station, there was finally a spark of hope.

In a heartfelt gesture of support, officials handed over 55 brand-new Yamaha Ego Avantis 125 motorcycles to the victims. This would help them regain the freedom to move, work, and rebuild their lives. The initiative was led by the Transport Ministry, with the bikes fully sponsored by corporate company Spanco.

“Motorcycles are not just vehicles here,” said Transport Minister Anthony Loke during the handover ceremony. “For many families, it’s their connection to work, school, and daily life. Losing them made an already tough situation even harder. We hope this eases their burden.”

Each bike is sourced through a special deal at around RM5,000 apiece. The bike comes with one-year insurance coverage, free helmets, road tax, and ownership certificates, all taken care of by Spanco. Recipients didn’t have to queue for days, either. The Road Transport Department (RTD) set up a mobile counter at the event, registering and preparing everything on the spot.

Every motorcycle proudly carries a special ‘Madani’ number plate. It is a symbol of resilience and renewal for a community determined to move forward.

More Than Just Motorcycles

For many of the residents, the new bikes represent more than transportation — they represent normalcy, a return to the rhythm of life before the explosion.

Some wiped away tears as they collected their keys and helmets, while others posed proudly with their new rides, a rare moment of joy after a week filled with uncertainty.

A Powerful Example of Unity

Loke emphasised that strong collaboration between government agencies and private sector partners like Spanco made this effort possible.

“When disaster strikes, it’s the strength of our unity that matters most. We’re grateful to everyone who came together to make this happen.”

The bikes rolled out of the handover site one after another. You could feel it in the air: a community, wounded but not broken, finally starting to move forward once more.
