iM Cubaholic Ep.6: City Slicker Honda Super Cub

iM Cubaholic Ep.6: City Slicker Honda Super Cub

May 28, 2020

iM Cubaholic covers everything about Honda’s famed Cub lineup. On this week’s episode, we are taking a look at the custom Honda Super Cub City Slicker.

In case you missed last week’s episode, Motorbike’s weekly iM Cubaholic series covers everything about the iconic Honda Cubs. The Cub is one of the most important bikes in both the motorcycle and Honda’s history.  Honda changed the way people look at riding motorcycles with the introduction of the Super cub and the ad campaign “You meet the nicest people on a Honda” back in the 1950s. Since then Honda has sold over 100 million Cubs with a large Cub lineup/variants where some models are barely known.  In this series, we cover everything from both known and unknown Cub models to their history, specs, features and many more.  Are you a Cub addict? well, this is something you wouldn’t want to miss!

Last week we had a look at one of the most outstanding custom cubs based on the series 1 Honda Super Cub series.  However, this week, we are having a look at the City Slicker Honda Super Cub based on the current modern C125 Honda Super Cub.

The City Slicker Honda Super Cub by Steady Garage

Based in California, Steady Garage was founded in 2012. Steady Garage focuses on building custom bikes and selling custom parts for a variety of motorcycles. One of our favourite custom builds from Steady Garage is the City Slicker Honda Super Cub, which was built specifically for SEMA 2019. The City Slicker is also our all-time favourite custom Cub build based on the current Super Cub (C125).

We hardly see anyone modifying modern Super Cubs, however, the guys at Steady Garage are different. Steady Garage says they chose the modern C125 for this build to allow the older generation to reminisce their youth and the younger generation to create new memories.  The inspiration for the City Slicker Super Cub apparently stems from the original Super Cub, which was truly classic design. Therefore, when building the City Slicker, Steady Garage didn’t want to step too far away from the origin so they only worked on what was needed.

What we think:

Looking at it, the build maintains the “Cub” aspects of the C125 while being totally unique. On top of this, we agree the City Slicker truly captures both the younger and older generation from the timeless design, modern and sporty touches that this build possesses. It’s because of these characters we decided to feature the City Slicker in this week’s episode.

Note:

We will be listing down the details of every single component used in the build (at the end); so if you are triggered to build something similar to the City Slicker Cub you can purchase off the shelf parts from shops or through Steady Garage directly. As for the custom components, some of them can be purchased from Steady Garage, however, a few custom components need machining and they are not sold in the market; therefore you would have to figure out a way to machine them out or replace them with off the shelf components that can be bought.

Design

As for the design, the City Slicker maintains most of the stock C125 components and bodyworks. To being with, the very obvious component that has been modified is the shortened (Chopped) front and rear fenders; which give the bike an edgier look.

Aside from this, the custom hazel brown seat and many other smaller details around the City Slicker, such as; custom CNC parts from G-Craft and Chimera Engineering, Vans Waffle Grips, and custom lights allows the build to stand out even more. In case you are wondering about the paint, it’s a custom 2 tone green and off-white paint…It looks black on the photos because of the shades!

Suspension, wheels and brakes

In the case of suspension, wheels and brakes, numerous components have been retrofitted. To begin with, the front Feign Honda Ruckus suspension with Racing Bros Mono R at the rear give the bike a low profile; Steady Garage says the bike has been lowered by 3 inches at the front! Moving on, the next component on the list is the custom hubs (with Feign stainless steel front axle) which hold the 3 piece front and rear wheels…Yes, the wheel selection in this build makes us want to drool too! To build these wheels Steady Garage had to design and machine their own rim centres and merge them with custom wheel barrels; which was apparently one of the challenging tasks because of the size of the rims.

We know you are wondering about the Brembo callipers. The stock brakes have been swapped out by Brembo P34 Brake callipers (front and rear) with custom rotors. Wondering how they managed to do this swap? They used Chimera Brembo 3PX Caliper brackets to hold the P34 callipers and Russel Stainless Steel braided brake lines at the front and back to complete the swap.

Engine and drivetrain

A few engine and drivetrain modifications have been done on the City Slicker. To being with, the bolt-on Chimera short ram intake with K&N Air filter makes sure the Slicker breaths properly. On top of this, Steady Garge put in an aftermarket Aracer RC Mini 5 ECU to increase power output…Why? Because, the City Slicker isn’t just about looks.  Aside from this, to ensure form and functionality; the stock sprockets and chains have been replaced by PBI Sproketcs and DID Super Non-Chain. Finally, to blend in with the engine upgrades and the overall design; Yoshimura Magnum GP exhaust system ensures a nice and deep, throatier sound.
