The automotive industry is constantly evolving and the autonomous technology is certainly garnering much attention to the car manufacturers such as Audi, Tesla and Mercedes-Benz. The two-wheeler sector has also joined the bandwagon with the participation of Yamaha, Honda and Ducati. This time, BMW Motorrad is taking the chance to explore this sector of technology with the new self-riding concept called “ConnectedRide” with the sole purpose of improving rider safety.
The concept is based on the BMW R 1200 GS which can accelerate, turn and even bake in the absence of a rider. The concept was showcased to a group of journalist at the BMW Group testing ground in Miramas, France.
Much of the information of the technology is yet to be revealed but there are speculations that the prototype uses a steering actuator motor whereas the throttle, clutch and gear inputs all come with sensors.
According to sources, the new self-riding technology can help with the development of passive safety systems such as lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking. There is no doubt that with the growing concerns of safety, BMW Motorrad has done a great job in proving that motorcycles are indeed capable of being safe.
