It took only two and a half season in grand prix racing for Spanish talent Joan Mir to move up from Moto3 to MotoGP, with Suzuki announcing today that the current Marc VDS rider in Moto2 will join the factory Suzuki team from next season on.
Mir, who was crowned Moto3 world champion in 2017, was being pursued by many MotoGP teams, but it was Suzuki who finally closed the deal with the one of the most promising riders in Moto2.
Although Joan Mir is still a Moto2 rookie, he already impressed in this debut season, climbing to the podium in the last two races and, best of all, he has now beaten his current team mate Alex Marquez by going to MotoGP first, while Marc Marquez younger brother still hasn’t made that move, though he’s in the pipeline to do it.
Suzuki will once again take the risk of signing a young talent, something they did some years ago with Maverick Viñales and more recently with Alex Rins. By betting in young talents Suzuki tried to beat other teams in signing them, but Suzuki didn’t manage to keep Viñales for too long, with Yamaha’s factory team singing the Spanish rider to ride alongside Valentino Rossi when Jorge Lorenzo went to Ducati.
This time around, the team led by Davide Brivio protected themselves in case Joan Mir proves to be such a talented rider like Maverick Viñales did at the time, and according to sources, the Hamamatsu factory made sure to include some options in the contract in case Mir gets the attention of other factory teams.
