The 2023/24 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship was clouded by controversy. The FIM made a last-minute decision to block Stark Future’s Varg, an electric motorcycle, from racing in Lievin, France. This shocked the racing community and damaged the FIM’s reputation. Now, the FIM has reversed course for the 2024 season.

This time, the FIM changed its regulations to allow electric motorcycles to compete. The season kicks off on December 14th in Poland, where electric bikes will race in the Prestige class. This decision marks a major shift toward electrification in the sport.

Electric Bikes Only in the Prestige Class

The FIM’s decision was not made alone. It involved collaboration between the FIM, Sport Up Agency, and top electric motorcycle manufacturers. However, electric bikes will only race in the Prestige class. The lower classes will remain for internal combustion engine (ICE) bikes.

FIM President Jorge Viegas expressed excitement about the development:
“This is an exciting new chapter for the FIM, with electric motorcycles coming into SuperEnduro alongside combustion motorcycles.”

He added that electric technology is already present in other FIM competitions, like MotoE and Trial.

Ensuring Fair Competition

According to Viegas, the FIM took steps to ensure fair competition between electric and ICE bikes. The new regulations create a balance in performance between the two technologies. They have also adjusted the rack standards to avoid bias.

“We have created new requirements, rules, and safety standards to avoid any kind of bias,” Viegas said.
This means that both types of bikes will be able to compete on an even playing field. The Prestige class will remain open to all bikes that meet the new rules.

Electric vs. ICE: Who Will Win?

Electric bikes have already proven themselves in trials competitions. They’ve even beaten ICE bikes in some races. The real question is whether this trend will continue in SuperEnduro.

The 2024 season is shaping up to be a thrilling test of technology. Electric bikes will be pitted directly against traditional ICE bikes. Fans can expect intense racing as these two technologies battle for dominance.

What are your predictions? Can electric bikes win in SuperEnduro, or will ICE bikes stay on top? Let us know in the comments!
