The Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team has officially announced that Ducati Test Rider Michele Pirro will replace Fabio Di Giannantonio for the final MotoGP round of the 2024 season at the Motul Solidarity Grand Prix of Barcelona this weekend.

Di Giannantonio, recovering from a recent shoulder surgery in preparation for the 2025 season, was initially covered by Andrea Iannone at the Malaysian GP. However, for this Barcelona round, Pirro will join Marco Bezzecchi in the VR46 garage pit.

Pirro to race with VR46

Pirro’s return marks his first MotoGP race since the 2023 Japanese GP. The Ducati test rider, who has been sidelined from the premier class this season due to the new concessions system, has nonetheless remained active, competing in the Italian Championship (CIV) and as a wildcard in the World Superbike round at Misano, where he achieved a best finish of 13th.

This appearance is not just a one-off; Pirro will also take part in the first Official Test of 2025 scheduled for Tuesday, November 19th, at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, providing VR46 with valuable feedback on their 2025 setup.

The Ducati’s remarkable competitiveness, coupled with the recent concessions rules, has limited Pirro’s MotoGP outings, with no wildcards registered for the 2024 season. However, his role with VR46 offers him a return to the MotoGP grid, allowing him to bring his extensive testing experience and fresh insights to VR46 as they prepare for the upcoming season.
