Property developer Malton Bhd is making another move into the electric mobility space, this time with plans that could see electric motorcycles assembled and distributed from Malaysia for the wider Southeast Asian market.

The group has signed a memorandum of understanding with China-based Dongguan Benling Vehicle Technology Co Ltd (BENLG) to explore setting up local assembly operations and building a distribution network for electric two-wheelers.

The agreement kicks off a series of feasibility and market studies to determine whether Malaysia can support large-scale electric motorcycle production, not just for domestic demand, but as a regional hub serving Asean.

BENLG, which manufactures electric motorcycles, scooters and tricycles, is evaluating Malaysia as its next expansion base and is seeking a local partner to anchor the venture. Malton, best known for property development, sees the potential tie-up as part of a broader push to diversify into green mobility and future-oriented industries.

If the collaboration moves forward, both sides will assess suitable sites for an assembly plant, engage regulators on approvals and incentives, and work out the capital structure required to launch the business. The study will also examine whether Malaysia can function as a gateway for regional exports, effectively positioning the country as a distribution centre for electric two-wheelers across Southeast Asia.

BENLG brings considerable manufacturing muscle to the table. Founded in 2003, the company operates several production facilities across China and maintains a sizeable headquarters in Dongguan. It already has a presence in multiple Asian markets, including India, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia, with products exported to dozens of countries worldwide.

For Malton, the move represents a renewed attempt to tap into the electric vehicle sector. The company previously explored an EV-related venture in 2021 through a proposed collaboration with Ho Wah Genting Bhd, though that plan did not progress after the agreement lapsed the following year.

This latest partnership suggests the group remains serious about entering the mobility space, particularly as governments across the region accelerate policies encouraging cleaner transport and electrification.

While the current agreement is non-binding and valid for nine months, it signals growing interest from both local corporates and international manufacturers in using Malaysia as a base for next-generation vehicle production.

If the feasibility studies line up, Malton’s next project might not be a property development — but a factory floor filled with electric bikes.
