Souo S2000CT: China’s Flat-Eight Cruiser Breaks Cover

Great Wall Motor (GWM) has long been a familiar name in the automotive world, building everything from rugged SUVs to sleek electric cars. But motorcycles? Until recently, few riders would have paired the Chinese giant with two wheels. That perception is changing fast. Under its new Souo motorcycle division, GWM is stepping into the premium motorcycle arena with a level of ambition that demands attention.

From Gold Wing Challenger to Cruiser Icon

Souo announced its arrival last year with the S2000, a luxury touring bike that immediately set tongues wagging. At its heart sits a 1,999cc flat-eight engine, a configuration almost unheard of in motorcycling, pushing out 151 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. Paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and even a reverse gear, the S2000 wasn’t just chasing the Honda Gold Wing; it was aiming to beat it on paper with more cylinders, more gears, and more technology.

Now Souo is expanding the lineup with the S2000CT, a cruiser range revealed through regulatory filings and scheduled for a public debut at the CIMAMotor show in China. Early reports describe a machine that blends the brute presence of a heavyweight cruiser with advanced engineering touches—an unmistakable statement of intent.

Four Flavours of Flat-Eight Power

The S2000CT will be offered in four variants, all sharing the same massive flat-eight platform and a 71.3-inch (1,810 mm) wheelbase:

  • LH2000-3 – A stripped-down solo cruiser for riders who want nothing but the essentials.
  • LH2000-4 – A two-up version with a passenger seat and footpegs.
  • LH2000-5 – A bagger equipped with hard luggage and a protective windshield.
  • LH2000-6 – A bagger with the same hard bags but no windshield for a cleaner silhouette.

Weights start at a hefty 891 pounds (404 kg) for the solo model and stretch to 941 pounds (427 kg) for the fully equipped baggers. These numbers put the Souo S2000CT firmly in heavyweight territory, but size is only part of the story.

Engineering Beyond Expectations

Perhaps the most intriguing detail is hidden in the front end. While the S2000CT appears to use a traditional telescopic fork, beneath the surface lies a Hossack-style double-wishbone suspension. This setup allows for precise steering and improved stability under heavy braking, while giving the bike the classic cruiser look riders expect. It’s a clever fusion of style and substance: proof that Chinese engineering is moving beyond mere imitation and into genuine innovation.

Changing Perceptions of Chinese Motorcycles

For years, Chinese motorcycles carried a reputation in Western markets for being cheap and disposable. Souo’s S2000 and S2000CT are rewriting that narrative. With bold engineering, premium features, and global ambitions, Great Wall Motor is positioning itself alongside established names like Honda, BMW, and Harley-Davidson.

Whether the S2000CT will make it to the U.S. or Europe remains uncertain. Import tariffs, regulatory hurdles, and pricing strategies will all play a role. But even if these bikes remain exclusive to Asian markets for now, their very existence signals a shift in the motorcycling landscape.

A New Era on Two Wheels

Competition breeds better machines, and Souo’s arrival could spark innovation across the industry. Riders everywhere stand to benefit if a heavyweight flat-eight cruiser from China can match or even surpass the benchmarks set by long-dominant brands.

You may never spot an S2000CT at your local dealership, but knowing that a flat-eight cruiser is carving roads halfway around the world makes the future of motorcycling feel a lot more exciting.
