Chin Voon Chuen, affectionately known as “Mr Half Glass,” has accomplished a feat most riders would only dream of, riding a 63-year-old Vespa from Malaysia to the Laos–China border and back, covering a staggering 5,321 kilometres in just 29 days.

The 39-year-old adventurer, a native of Mantin, set off on June 5, 2025, aboard a lovingly restored Italian-built Vespa. What began as a personal quest soon became a remarkable journey across five countries, culminating in a proud moment where Chin stood at the Boten border crossing, waving the Malaysian flag and declaring, “Saya Anak Malaysia!”

Obstacles and Overhauls

The journey was not without drama. On the second day, Chin’s Vespa broke down in Songkhla, Thailand. Luckily, a skilled father-son mechanic team in Hat Yai performed a complete engine overhaul, allowing the adventure to continue.

The most harrowing moment came just 10km before reaching Boten, where flash floods had left the road submerged in water and thick mud. Chin’s Vespa stalled in nearly knee-deep water. However, the locals stepped in to help clean his spark plug and get the vintage scooter running again.

An Epic Route with His Vespa

Chin’s journey took him from Malaysia to southern Thailand (Hat Yai, Krabi, Surat Thani), up to the highlands of northern Thailand (Mae Sariang, Pai, Mae Hong Son). After that, he headed into the scenic borderlands near Laos and China. After reaching Boten, he retraced his route home via Chiang Rai, Bangkok, and Kelantan, before arriving back in Mantin on 3 July.

A Journey of the Heart

Chin described the ride as a birthday gift to himself. Despite being physically demanding and mechanically risky, it was a deeply personal achievement. He credited his success to the support of his Vespa club, his family, and a mentor from Jerantut who provided crucial route guidance.

“Every part of this journey tested me,” said Chin. “But every breakdown, every uphill climb, and every thunderstorm reminded me why I ride.”

Big Ride, Modest Budget

Surprisingly, the entire trip cost him just RM6,000. This proves that adventure doesn’t require luxury, just grit, spirit, and a well-worn Vespa.

Chin’s journey not only celebrates his passion for vintage scooters but also showcases the enduring spirit of Malaysian riders pushing boundaries, one kilometre at a time.
