As a silver sponsor, HLYM backs Malaysia’s national rugby sevens team ahead of the 33rd SEA Games.

Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) has stepped up as a silver sponsor for Malaysia’s national sevens rugby team, Bungaraya 7s, ahead of the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand later this year.

At a symbolic cheque handover held at Genblu Café in Sungai Buoh, HLYM contributed RM200,000 to support the training, development, and welfare of both the men’s and women’s national rugby squads. The event was attended by players, officials from Malaysia Rugby, and HLYM’s top management.

President of Malaysia Rugby, Mr. Amir Amri Bin Haji Mohamad, expressed gratitude for the timely support, especially as the team, mainly made up of IPT (higher education institution) students, continues to train despite financial challenges. “They always show a high fighting spirit and extraordinary commitment in every training session and tournament, despite facing various constraints,” he said.

Meanwhile, HLYM Managing Director, Professor Datuk Dr. Jim Khor Mun Wei, noted that the passion and determination shown by the Bungaraya 7s team resonated with Yamaha’s values. “I think this is just the start, perhaps we can further discuss with MR on other (programmes) we can work together on for the development of rugby in Malaysia or perhaps even in motorsports,”

To commemorate the collaboration, Genblu Café unveiled a special new dish, BLUngaraya 7’s Chicken, inspired by the fighting spirit of the rugby team. Featuring seven nutritious ingredients representing each player in a sevens rugby lineup, the dish is crafted to reflect balance and performance, just like the sport itself.

The Bungaraya 7s team has shown consistent promise on the regional stage, securing silver and bronze at the 2019 SEA Games and finishing as runners-up at the recent Southeast Asian Rugby Sevens Championship in Singapore. With this new partnership, the team now gears up with renewed motivation for SEA Games glory.
