The FIM Motocross World Championship returned to action this weekend with Round 7 at the iconic red clay circuit of Águeda on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, roughly 250 kilometres north of Lisbon. The Portuguese Grand Prix saw the much-anticipated return of Mattia Guadagnini, who rejoined the grid after sitting out three rounds due to a crash just before the Sardinian GP.

Guadagnini, still finding his rhythm, posted the 19th fastest time during timed practice on the fast and demanding surface. His teammate Jeremy Seewer, riding high on momentum after a podium finish at his home Grand Prix, looked sharp and secured the 9th gate for the qualifying race, just one second off the pole.

However, the complexion of the track shifted dramatically between sessions as heavy rain transformed the surface into a muddy and highly technical challenge. Despite the adverse conditions, Seewer launched off the gate with precision aboard his Desmo450 MX, quickly slotting into fourth place. Guadagnini, meanwhile, also got a solid jump and settled into 16th early on.

Drama struck on the third lap as Seewer went down, remounted, and was then blinded by a mud splash, forcing him off track and dropping him to 20th. The Swiss rider responded with characteristic determination, clawing back 11 positions to finish 9th and well within the points.

Guadagnini, taking a measured and strategic approach in his comeback ride, steadily climbed to 12th, setting himself up for a promising gate position in Sunday’s main races.

With unpredictable weather and ever-changing track conditions, Águeda is already proving to be a stern test of skill and endurance. All eyes now turn to Sunday’s motos, where both riders will look to capitalise on their strong foundations from Saturday’s qualifying.
