Learn how Pinlock visors work, their benefits, and how to install them to enhance your riding experience in all weather conditions.

In today’s world, most helmets come with a visor that has a pin-lock attachment point, which is especially useful for riders in cold climates.

However, in Malaysia, cold weather is rare unless you ride in areas like Genting or Cameron Highlands early in the morning or during a chilly night. This brings us to the focus of this article.

When the temperature drops, you’ll quickly notice your helmet visor fogging up. Fogging occurs due to condensation, which happens when warm, moist air contacts a cooler surface, causing the moisture to form a damp film on the visor.

While some helmet visors have anti-fog coatings, these are often ineffective and wear out over time. All helmets can fog up under certain conditions, with snug-fitting, high-quality helmets being more prone to this issue because they restrict air circulation to reduce noise.

To prevent visor fogging, aside from venting or opening the visor, the most effective solution is using a Pinlock anti-fogging insert.

How Does a Pinlock Visor Work?

Well right, how does it work? The Pinlock lens basically is made of a transparent, organic material with a silicone edge. This lens fits between the pins on both sides of the helmet visor, creating an airtight seal.

The thin layer of air between the Pinlock lens and the visor acts like double glazing, minimizing the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the visor, which prevents fogging even in cold, damp conditions.

How to Install a Pinlock Lens

Many new helmets, like the KYT full-face ‘TT,’ come with a Pinlock lens included. Installing the Pinlock lens involves a few steps:

1. Remove the Visor: Start by removing the visor from the helmet. Most helmets have a quick-lock system, making this step straightforward.

2. Prepare the Pinlock Lens: Take the Pinlock lens out of its packaging, making sure not to touch the sensitive silicone edge.

3. Fit the Lens: Press one side of the visor against your body to straighten it, then fit one end of the Pinlock lens into the nearest pin. Keep the visor as straight as possible and fit the other end into the opposite pin.

4. Secure the Lens: Once the lens is in place, lay the visor flat on a table and push the Pinlock lens towards the inside of the visor to ensure it presses against the visor everywhere.

If the Pinlock lens isn’t tightly pressed against the visor, you can adjust it by popping out the plastic pins, turning them, and refitting the lens.

Therefore, by following these steps, you can guarantee your helmet visor stays clear, providing better visibility and a safer riding experience in various weather conditions.
