From 31st of March to 1st of April, racing fans will be able to join the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship as the 2018 season opens with round 1 in Tangkak race track.
It’s been 25 years since this championship started, and along the way many racers passed through what is a very competitive race series. Considered as a benchmark to other national racing series, the Malaysian Cub Prix Championship helped to create four generations of Malaysian riders and many more are expected to appear in the future!
The first generation, M. Meganathan, Wazi Abdul Hamid, Chia Tuck Cheong and Rosnizam Mohd Noor were the first icons of motorcycle racing in Malaysia. The second generation, Ahmad Fuad Baharudin, Ahmad Fazli Sham, Elly Idzlianizar Ilias, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman and Mohd Zamri Baba turned their homegrown skills into a tour-de-force in the Asian arena.
Then came the third generation, Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah, Khairul Idham Pawi, Zulfahmi Khairuddin, and Zaqhwan Zaidi. This generation have taken their careers to new heights as they conquered the international racing stage. The fourth generation, Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin, Mohd Akid Aziz, Azzroey Hakeem Anuar and many more are the current batch of riders waiting in the wings for their own careers to take flight.
Round 1 of the 2018 season happens this next weekend at the Tangkak Race Track with action starting at 9h15am on Saturday, with the first practice session for the CP150 class, and on Sunday action starts a little earlier at 8h15am with the CP115 A warm up session. Ron Hogg, Director of Safe Aim Mutual Sdn Bhd, the race promoters of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship, is proud of what this race series has accomplished after 25 years: “The sport of motorcycle racing has grown tremendously over the decades. The achievements of our Malaysian riders is but the tip of the iceberg. Cub Prix’s success in changing the public’s perception to the sport is something that we are truly proud of. Even more gratifying, is the successful creation of a thriving motorsports industry that has allowed Malaysian riders the freedom to choose the path of their own careers. For this, we thank our long-term partners, especially Petronas and the motorcycle manufacturers, for their continued support”.
Present at the season opener will be YB Brig. Jen Khairy Jamaluddin, Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports, to officiate the Silver Jubilee of the Cub Prix Championship.
Continuing to help the younger riders, the Minister of Youth and Sports will also give bigger support to the Klinik Cub Prix, a programme that targets riders from 18 to 25 years old, a project led by Shahrol Yuzi Ahmad Zaini and also the two-time Asian champion Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman.
This decade-long programme will feature an expanded curriculum this year: from the usual 10 clinics held throughout the season, in 2018 the Klinik Cub Prix will have 30 workshops, and additionally the theory segments will be complemented by a practical session so that the young students can show what they’ve learned.
