An exclusive look at how Irfan turned a wedding trip into an unforgettable cross-border adventure ride with his Z650.

For most bikers, the idea of crossing borders on two wheels feels like a bucket-list moment. For Irfan, a 27 year old from Cyberjaya, that dream became a reality when he fired up his Kawasaki Z650 and rode straight across the causeway into Singapore, with his wife riding pillion and a wedding invite as the perfect excuse for adventure.

It wasn’t just about attending a friend’s big day, it was about testing what it feels like to take his middleweight naked bike out of its comfort zone in Malaysia and into a country known for its stricter rules, cleaner streets, and, well, pricier food.

From checkpoint hiccups to smooth highways, Irfan got the full taste of what riding in Singapore is really like and he’s sharing every detail of the journey.

Irfan Ride to Singapore

Riding into Singapore for the First Time

“I felt like I achieved something new,” Irfan shared. “Usually I only ride around Malaysia, but this was my first time riding across the bridge and into another country with my new Z650.”

That first ride across the Causeway was a milestone in itself, giving him a sense of accomplishment and excitement.

But how about the challenges? Like many first-timers, Irfan did face a small hiccup at the checkpoint. “I couldn’t pass through the normal counter because it was my first time entering Singapore. I had to go to the last counter to register my fingerprint.”

“The same thing happened when exiting too. But after registering once, you can use any counter the next time you enter or leave.” It was a minor inconvenience, but now that it’s done, his next trip will be much smoother.

Spotting the Differences: Malaysia vs Singapore Roads

One thing Irfan immediately noticed was how strictly road rules are followed in Singapore. “Drivers there are more careful. In Malaysia some bikes stop after the white line, but in Singapore you cannot do that or else, you’ll get fined,” said Irfan.

“Also, the emergency lane is strictly for emergencies only, and lane splitting is rare. Even when the light is green, if pedestrians are still crossing, you must wait until the road is fully clear.” It was an eye-opener that made him more aware of how disciplined road culture can shape the riding experience.

The Z650 didn’t just get him across the border, it made the journey a smooth and enjoyable one. “With 65.7 Nm of torque and 67 hp, the bike feels very rider-friendly. I didn’t need to push too hard to get a comfortable speed, and the whole ride went without problems,” Irfan explained. Rolling up to his friend’s wedding on a naked bike added that extra touch of pride and style.

What Stood Out in Singapore

Beyond the ride, a few things left a big impression on Irfan. “The cost of things really stood out. Prices look the same as in Malaysia, but in dollars. So if something costs RM4 here, it’s about SGD4 there, multiply by 3.5 and you’ll feel the difference.”

Another unique experience was Singapore’s ERP toll system. “There’s no barrier, it just scans automatically, so traffic flows smoothly since cars don’t have to stop. Plus, the streets were so clean and neat, it really impressed me.”

Advice for Malaysian Bikers Planning a Singapore Ride

From his first experience, Irfan shared a few tips for fellow riders who want to try crossing into Singapore with their bikes:

  • Make sure your bike is in good condition
  • Number plates must be on the front mudguard, not the windshield
  • Register your Autopass card at least one month in advance
  • Once you choose your collection point (Woodlands or Tuas), you cannot change
  • Download the MyICA e-Pass app for smooth check-in (after first entry)
  • Fill up fuel before reaching the checkpoint
  • If you smoke, only do so at designated smoking areas, no public smoking allowed

Pay attention to ERP timings and routes, if you don’t have an ERP card reader, avoid ERP roads during active hours to prevent summons

Irfan Ride to Singapore

For Irfan, the ride was tiring at times but completely worth it. Riding his Z650 into Singapore with his wife on the back seat wasn’t just about attending a wedding, it was about opening a whole new chapter in his riding journey. The mix of strict traffic rules, cleaner roads, and the thrill of crossing a border on two wheels turned what could’ve been a simple trip into an unforgettable memory.

So, maybe after reading this, you’re already imagining yourself cruising across the causeway on a Kawasaki Z650 or maybe a different bike that’s perfect for your next road trip.
