2023 Kawasaki Ninja 650 Review: The Everyday Bike That Does It All

2023 Kawasaki Ninja 650 Review: The Everyday Bike That Does It All

Smooth, stylish, and surprisingly versatile, the Ninja 650 blends sportbike fun with real-world comfort, making it one of the best all-rounders in Malaysia’s middleweight class.

Kawasaki’s Ninja lineup has always been about adrenaline, fun, and full of character. But what if you want a bit of everything? A bike that can cruise comfortably, take on twisty corners, and still give you that thrill when you twist the throttle?

That’s where the Ninja 650 steps in. It might not get as much spotlight as its bigger or racier siblings, the 636 supersport, but this one deserves a closer look.

Familiar Face, Updated Tech

The Ninja 650 got its last major update back in 2020, and that version is still what’s sold today. It replaced the older 2017 model and brought along a few welcome improvements like full LED lighting and a crisp TFT-LCD display with Bluetooth connectivity. Pair it with your phone, and you even get an information of your riding data, pretty slick for a mid-range sportbike.

The rest of the bike? It sticks to what works. The 649cc parallel-twin engine is as smooth and reliable as ever, putting out 67.3 hp at 8,000 rpm and 65.7 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. It’s mated to a six-speed gearbox and comes with an Assist & Slipper clutch that makes downshifting smoother and riding in traffic easier.

Built for the Real World

The chassis is still a steel-tube frame that uses the engine as a stressed member for added strength. Nothing fancy, just solid engineering. The seat height is a friendly 31 inches, making it accessible for most riders, and the 193 kg weight feels manageable even at low speeds.

Suspension is handled by a 41mm telescopic fork up front and a preload-adjustable rear monoshock, which works well enough for everyday riding. Braking is taken care of by twin 300mm discs up front with Nissin caliper, and a 220mm disc at the rear, both with ABS as standard. Fuel capacity sits at 15 litres, giving it a decent range before needing a top-up.

Features That Matter

Kawasaki didn’t overload the Ninja 650 with unnecessary tech, but the essentials are there. You get three-mode Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC), dual-channel ABS, a vibrant TFT dash, and that Bluetooth connectivity. The new LED lighting adds a modern touch, and the slightly taller windshield is great for reducing windblast on longer rides.

What’s It Like To Ride?

Honestly? It’s a joy. Whether you’re navigating city traffic, cruising on the highway, or leaning into corners on twisty roads, the Ninja 650 handles it all with ease. The riding position is sporty but not punishing like the premium version of it, the ZX-6R, which definitely making it a great choice for both weekend blasts and daily commutes.

The power delivery is smooth and predictable, enough to keep things exciting, but never intimidating. Its the confident that the bike could go fast and its fast enough on the Malaysian road and stable riding experience is what its built for.

A lot of people in Malaysia use this bike for light sport touring, and it’s easy to see why. It’s got just the right mix of comfort, performance, and versatility. In short, it’s a proper do-it-all machine.

Final Thoughts

At RM36,600 (excluding insurance and road tax), the 2023 Kawasaki Ninja 650 offers serious value for money. It’s not trying to be the fastest or most extreme bike in the segment, but it nails the balance of performance, practicality, and everyday fun.

If you’re looking for a bike that’s reliable, approachable, and still packs plenty of punch when you want it, the Ninja 650 should be on your shortlist. Underrated? Maybe, but that’s exactly what makes it such a gem.
