Thailand to Stop Hosting MotoGP After 2026

Chang International Circuit’s seven-year run ends despite generating billions in revenue and global exposure, leaving fans and organizers disappointed.

Thailand’s tenure as a host of the prestigious MotoGP championship is expected to conclude after the 2026 event, following the government’s decision to discontinue its financial support. The announcement was made by Newin Chidchob, chairman of the Chang International Circuit in Buriram province, who expressed deep disappointment over the move.

In a Facebook post on Sunday night, Newin revealed that the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) had officially informed him that the government would not extend its contract with Dorna Sports S.L., the commercial rights holder of MotoGP, beyond the 2026 event. This decision marks the end of Thailand’s seven-year run as a MotoGP host, with the 2026 race being the last to be held at the Chang International Circuit.

Economic Impact and Achievements

Newin highlighted the significant economic benefits of hosting MotoGP, citing the 2025 event as a prime example. Held from February 28 to March 2, the three-day event attracted 224,634 spectators and generated 5.043 billion baht (approximately RM 650 million) in spending across Buriram and nearby provinces.

“I deeply regret this decision, as the government would only need to invest 500 million baht per year, while private sponsors would contribute 300 million baht annually, yet the event generates 5 billion baht in revenue for the country,” Newin wrote.

He also emphasized the global exposure Thailand gained through MotoGP, with nearly one billion viewers tuning in via live broadcasts to more than 200 countries. The Chang International Circuit, which hosted the opening event of MotoGP 2025, has become a world-renowned venue thanks to its successful organization of the championship.

Government’s Role and Negotiations

Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports has been the official organizer of MotoGP on behalf of the government. Newin noted that government participation was a key requirement by Dorna Sports to ensure the smooth organization of the event.

Despite Newin’s announcement, SAT governor Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee stated that negotiations with Dorna Sports are still ongoing regarding a possible contract extension. Kongsak reaffirmed the SAT and the government’s desire to continue hosting MotoGP to promote tourism and maintain Thailand’s position on the global motorsport stage.
