Pirelli Introduces SCX Rear Tyre for Moto2 in Jerez Pre-Season Test

Pirelli Introduces SCX Rear Tyre for Moto2 in Jerez Pre-Season Test

Moto2 will have a new supersoft Pirelli SCX rear and 3.5″ front rims, and Moto3 will also have a minimum pressure requirement for the rear.

Pirelli is set to introduce its new SCX (Supersoft) rear tyre to Moto2 riders for the first time during the official pre-season tests at Jerez, scheduled from 18 to 20 February.

This marks a significant evolution in tyre technology, offering an even softer alternative to the SC0 (Soft) compound used in 2024. The SCX has already been utilized in WorldSBK for several years and will now be available at select circuits in the 2025 Moto2 season, depending on asphalt characteristics and temperature conditions.

Another technical update for Moto2 in 2025 is the transition to a narrower 3.5-inch front rim, replacing the previous 3.75-inch version. This modification is expected to improve handling, particularly in corner entry and quick direction changes.

Meanwhile, the Moto3 class will retain the tyre allocation from the 2024 season, with SC1 (Soft) and SC2 (Medium) compounds available for both the front and rear. However, a new regulation introduces a minimum rear tyre pressure of 1.50 bar (22 psi), aligning Moto3 with the requirements already in place for Moto2.

The pre-season tests at Jerez follow last week’s private sessions in Portimão, where lap records were broken in both classes—by more than eight-tenths in Moto3 and approximately three-tenths in Moto2.

Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli’s Motorcycle Racing Director, commented on the upcoming tests: “In Portugal, Moto2 teams and riders had the opportunity to test one of this season’s key updates—the new front rim with a narrower 3.5-inch channel. We anticipate this change will enhance handling, particularly in corner entry and agility during direction changes. Another major development is the introduction of the SCX rear tyre, which, like all our racing solutions, is a product available on the market. Some teams may have tested it privately, but this will be the first official allocation in Moto2. The SCX is an even softer option than the SC0 and will be available at circuits where asphalt and temperature conditions allow for optimal performance.

In Moto3, given last season’s strong results, we have confirmed the 2024 tyre solutions while introducing a minimum rear tyre pressure of 1.50 bar to ensure consistent performance.”

With these developments, Pirelli aims to further refine tyre performance in both Moto2 and Moto3, enhancing the competitive edge for teams as they prepare for the 2025 season.
