Joan Mir to Miss Japanese and Indonesian MotoGP Rounds

The Honda rider will take three weeks away from competition while doctors investigate abnormal blood-test results following his withdrawal from the San Marino GP.

Honda has confirmed that Joan Mir will miss the upcoming Japanese and Indonesian Grands Prix as he continues to recover from an ongoing health issue.

The 2020 MotoGP World Champion retired from the San Marino GP on 13 September after completing just five laps. Mir travelled to Barcelona that same day, where he underwent medical examinations the following day after experiencing discomfort throughout the Misano weekend.

Honda subsequently confirmed that detailed medical tests had identified altered parameters in Mir’s blood-test results, requiring further investigation.

With no clear diagnosis established and based on the symptoms Mir experienced in Italy, his medical team has advised him to prioritise recovery and undergo additional tests.

As a result, Mir will take approximately three weeks away from racing while doctors continue investigating the cause of his condition.

Honda Searches for Replacement

Mir’s absence creates a rider vacancy for Honda during the upcoming Asian double-header, beginning with the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, followed by the Indonesian GP at Mandalika.

Honda HRC test rider Takaaki Nakagami is already scheduled to compete at Motegi as a wildcard with the HRC Test Team, meaning he is unlikely to be available to replace Mir at the factory team during the Japanese round. Honda is therefore expected to announce a replacement rider for the two races in the coming days.

The manufacturer has several options within its testing programme, including Aleix Espargaró, who serves as an HRC test rider. Another potential option is Cal Crutchlow, who has previously stepped in for Honda during the 2026 season.

Honda has not yet confirmed who will replace Mir. The next round after the Asian double-header will be the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island from 23 to 25 October, although Honda has not indicated that this will be Mir’s targeted return.

Mir’s Honda Chapter Nears Its End

Mir is scheduled to leave Honda at the end of the 2026 season, with his final race for the manufacturer expected to take place at Valencia on 29 November.

The Spaniard joined Honda after winning the 2020 MotoGP World Championship with Suzuki and has spent four seasons with the RC213V.

During his Honda tenure, Mir has recorded two third-place finishes in MotoGP, while crashes and injuries have also disrupted his campaigns.

For the 2027 season, Mir is set to begin a new chapter with Gresini Racing, where he will compete aboard a Ducati. For now, however, his immediate priority is recovery and identifying the cause of the symptoms that forced him to withdraw from the San Marino GP.
