To some, motorcycles are just another means of transportation. However, they often represent freedom, innovation, and engineering excellence. Throughout the years, brands all over the world have introduced thousands of motorcycles to the consumer market. However, there are a number of motorcycles that entered the market and absolutely revolutionized the industry.

Some of the motorcycles have introduced groundbreaking technology that have never been heard before at that time, while others instantly became cultural icons in the motorcycle scene, and some even dominated the racetrack with it’s sheer performance. Here are the top 5 most iconic motorcycles in history that left a lasting legacy and continue to influence motorcycle design today.

Top 5 iconic motorcycles in history

1. Honda Super Cub

Back in 1958, motorcycles were mostly seen as machines for enthusiast or workers, but Honda decided to change that with introduction of a motorcycle that anyone could ride, regardless of age, gender, or riding experience. That motorcycle is called the Honda Super Cub. It absolutely wasn’t built for speed, but it changed the way people viewed motorcycles.

The motorcycle used a step-through frame that made getting on and off the motorcycle easily accessible for all demographics. It was powered by a reliable 49cc four-stroke engine that is mated to a semi-automatic transmission. This means riders do not have the need to learn how to use a clutch. The maintenance costs are very affordable and it is comfortable enough for daily commuting.

Throughout it’s reign in the industry, over 100 million units of the Super cub were produces, making it the best-selling motor vehicle ever in history with it’s famous slogan; “You meet the nicest people on a Honda.” It helped to establish Honda as a world renowned motorcycle manufacturer. It didn’t just become a successful motorcycle, it changed global mobility forever.

2. Honda CB750

During this time, a lot of large-capacity motorcycles were mostly expensive British motorcycles that were not always known for their reliability. That’s when Honda decided to change that by introducing a machine that superbike riders can enjoy without having to sacrifice reliability. That machine is called the Honda CB750.

It is quite a revolutionary machine. It was. Powered by a 736cc inline-four engine that is absolutely smooth while delivering impressive performance if compared to its British rivals. Besides that, this motorcycle also comes with an electric starter as well as a front disc brake which is quite uncommon features for motorcycles in that era. Despite it’s advanced technology, it was offered at a very affordable price.

This motorcycle became well known as the world’s first true “superbike” and it set the benchmark for European manufacturers to further improve their motorcycles. With the existence of this motorcycle, it forever changed customer expectations regarding superbikes and it has inspired a number of inline-four motorcycles that we know today. Easy to say, they owe something to the CB750.

3. Yamaha YZF-R1

When the Yamaha YZF-R1 was launched back in 1998, it completely changed the superbike segment. At a time when litre-class sportbikes were becoming bigger and heavier, Yamaha introduced a motorcycle that was lighter, more compact and significantly more powerful than many of its rivals. Powered by a 998cc inline-four crossplane engine, the R1 delivered exhilarating performance while maintaining agile handling, making it an instant favourite among both road riders and track enthusiasts.

What made the YZF-R1 truly iconic was its revolutionary design and engineering. Yamaha’s compact engine layout allowed for a shorter wheelbase without compromising stability, giving the bike razor-sharp handling that set a new benchmark for superbikes. Over the years, the R1 continued to evolve with cutting-edge technology inspired by MotoGP, including ride-by-wire throttle, traction control, quickshifter, launch control and a crossplane crankshaft engine that delivered a unique exhaust note and exceptional power delivery.

More than two decades after its debut, the Yamaha YZF-R1 remains one of the most respected and influential superbikes ever built. Its combination of race-inspired technology, thrilling performance and unmistakable styling has helped it earn legendary status among motorcycle enthusiasts, making it one of the most iconic motorcycles in history.

4. Harley-Davidson Sportster

When a lot of British motorcycles were starting to enter the American market, Harley-Davidson wanted to try and compete with these lighter and faster motorcycles. That’s when they decided to make Harley’s longest-running production motorcycle, the Harley-Davidson Sportster.

Powered by an 883cc air-cooled “Ironhead” V-twin engine, this motorcycle was able to deliver strong low-end torque and a raw riding experience instantly captured the hearts of American riders. Its simple design, punchy performance and  notable exhaust note made it one of Harley-Davidson’s most recognisable motorcycles.

What made the Sportster more iconic is its versatility. It has a huge aftermarket and customization scene. It became the go-to platform for custom builders where many builders transformed this motorcycle into bobbers, choppers, or even café racers. After more than six decades, the Sportster continues to create a legacy that inspires riders around the world, proving that is not just about speed and performance, but character and lifestyle that the motorcycle represents.

5. Ducati 916

When it was first introduced back in 1994, the Ducati 916 completely redefined what a superbike could look like. Designed by the legendary Massimo Tamburini, the 916 combined breathtaking Italian styling with race-winning performance. Features such as the single-sided swingarm, under-seat exhausts and trellis frame gave the bike a distinctive appearance that many enthusiasts still consider one of the most beautiful motorcycle designs ever created.

However, the Ducati 916 was much more than just a pretty face. Powered by a 916cc L-twin engine, it delivered thrilling performance and quickly became a dominant force in the World Superbike Championship during the 1990s. Its combination of sharp handling, powerful acceleration and racing success helped establish Ducati as one of the world’s leading superbike manufacturers.

More than 30 years after its debut, the Ducati 916 remains one of the most influential sportbikes ever built. Its design continues to inspire modern Ducati motorcycles, while its racing pedigree and timeless styling have secured its place as one of the greatest and most iconic motorcycles in history.

Conclusion

Throughout history, countless motorcycles have been introduced, but only a select few have managed to leave a lasting impact on the industry. The Honda Super Cub revolutionised everyday transportation, the Honda CB750 redefined the superbike segment, the Triumph Bonneville became a symbol of British motorcycling, the Harley-Davidson Sportster embodied freedom and individuality, while the Ducati 916 set new standards for superbike design and performance.

Although motorcycle technology continues to evolve, the legacy of these legendary machines lives on. Their influence can still be seen in many of today’s motorcycles, proving that true icons are remembered not only for their performance, but for the way they changed the motorcycle world. Whether you’re a collector, an enthusiast or a new rider, these five motorcycles will always hold a special place in motorcycling history.
