2024 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Martin remains sidelined after shoulder surgery, with Aprilia confirming his absence from the upcoming Portugal round as recovery continues.

2024 MotoGP World Champion Jorge Martin will not participate in the upcoming Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao, as Aprilia confirmed the Spaniard is still recovering from a shoulder injury sustained earlier in the season.
Martin’s year has been plagued by a series of injuries, the latest occurring during the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, where a Turn 1 collision involving his Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi resulted in a displaced shoulder fracture. The injury required surgery and has kept Martin out of action since.
While the 2024 champion has resumed light training and recovery has shown positive progress, Aprilia stated that he will sit out the Portuguese GP to focus fully on rehabilitation. A timeline for his return has not been announced, and it remains unclear whether he will compete in the season finale at the Valencia Grand Prix or take part in the post-race test.
In recent rounds, Aprilia’s test rider Lorenzo Savadori has been filling in for Martin, and it is expected that he will continue to do so at Portimao, though the team has yet to officially confirm this arrangement.
Martin’s 2025 season has been marked by multiple setbacks — starting with a pre-season crash just 13 laps into testing at Sepang, followed by a training injury that ruled him out of the first three rounds. His return at the Qatar Grand Prix ended in another crash, which left him with further injuries and sidelined him until the Czech Grand Prix before the summer break.
Adding to the turbulence, Martin was involved in a contract dispute with Aprilia earlier this year, attempting to activate a release clause due to unmet performance conditions. The disagreement nearly went to court before the Spaniard ultimately reaffirmed his commitment to the team for 2026.
Having completed only six of the 20 rounds so far this season, Martin’s best result remains a fourth-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
He’s not the only world champion absent from the grid, 2025 titleholder Marc Marquez has also been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a shoulder injury in a crash with Bezzecchi at the Indonesian Grand Prix.
