The importance of Wearing Gloves While Riding Motorcycle

The Often-Overlooked Importance of Wearing Gloves When Riding a Motorcycle.

When it comes to motorcycle gear, most riders in Malaysia never leave home without their helmet. Some go the extra mile with riding jackets and boots. But gloves? They’re often forgotten or worse, dismissed as unnecessary.

The truth is, motorcycle gloves are one of the most underrated yet essential pieces of riding gear. They’re not just about looking like a serious rider or adding flair to your outfit, they serve real, functional purposes that could save your skin, quite literally.

Wearing gloves used to be stereotyped as something only riders of big bikes like superbikes or touring motorcycles would do. But these days, even moped riders, especially delivery riders, have started wearing gloves, and it’s becoming more common. It’s great to see it turning into a norm.

Your Hands Will Hit the Ground First

Think about it, because in any fall, what’s the first thing we instinctively use to break our fall? Our hands. In a motorcycle crash, whether at low speed in traffic or during a high-speed slide, your palms are likely to hit the asphalt first. Without gloves, you’re exposing some of the most delicate and important parts of your body, fingers, knuckles, and tendons, to serious injury.

Even a minor fall at approximately around 30km/h, can shred bare skin within seconds. Now imagine sliding on a rough Malaysian road surface at highway speed. The damage could be permanent.

Grip, Comfort, and Control

Beyond protection, gloves offer something riders don’t always realise until they’ve gone without them: grip and control. A quality pair of gloves improves your hold on the throttle, brake, and clutch levers, especially during long rides or in wet conditions.

Have you ever ridden in the rain with wet hands? Or tried to pull the brake lever with sweaty palms on a hot afternoon? Gloves help manage that. Some even come with touchscreen-friendly fingertips, built-in ventilation, and padding for added comfort.

Weather Protection

Malaysia’s weather is famously unpredictable. Gloves protect your hands from sunburn, rain, cold morning air, and yes, even from flying insects and debris. Riding at 100km/h and getting hit by a pebble or a bee on your bare knuckles is not fun, I speak from experience.

It’s About Muscle Memory and Habit

Many riders see gloves as optional, something they’ll put on for long rides, but skip when it’s just a quick trip to the kedai or mamak. Sure, riding nearby might feel harmless, and that’s totally understandable. But let’s be real, accidents can happen anywhere, not just on highways. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing to prioritise safety, even for short rides. So, no need to judge those who suit up every time.

Wearing gloves regularly turns it into a habit. Just like how buckling your helmet becomes second nature, putting on gloves starts to feel automatic. Once it’s part of your routine, it no longer feels like a hassle, it just feels right.

Wearing Gloves

Choose the Right Pair

Not all gloves are created equal. Depending on the type of riding you do, there are different styles, from lightweight mesh gloves for city commuting, to reinforced leather gloves for touring and sport riding. Look for gloves with proper knuckle protection, palm sliders, and secure wrist straps.

Cheap gloves might look the part, but without proper materials or stitching, they can fail the moment you need them most.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, your hands are your lifeline, for riding, for working, for living. Don’t take them for granted. As motorcyclists, we embrace the freedom of the open road, but that freedom comes with responsibility, to ourselves and our loved ones. So the next time you gear up for a ride, don’t forget your gloves. Your hands will thank you.

Got a pair of gloves but no bike yet? No worries, we’ve got you covered! Head over to iMotorbike.com and explore thousands of motorcycles waiting for their next rider (that’s you!). Or better yet, drop by our iMotorbike Glenmarie showroom and check them out in person. Who knows? You might just find the perfect ride to match those gloves.
