Yamaha Set to Launch the YZF-R9 on October 9

Countdown to the highly anticipated reveal of the YZF-R9 begins—will it meet expectations?

After years of speculation and excitement, Yamaha is finally gearing up to launch one of the most anticipated motorcycles in recent history – the YZF-R9. With a teaser video circulating across Yamaha’s social media channels, the countdown has officially begun for a big reveal on October 9.

In a video teaser titled The Dawn of a New Era, Yamaha offers just enough to fuel the excitement. The video prominently highlights the number “9” in a countdown that freezes at the number – clearly signalling the long-awaited entry of the YZF-R9 into the sportbike scene. It seems Yamaha’s “Lucky 9” is more than just a coincidence.

For years, many of us have been patiently waiting for this moment, and it looks like Yamaha has timed it perfectly. With the recent decision to make the R1 a track-only model in Europe, the stage is set for the R9 to take the spotlight, at least for road warriors. While the R1 will still be street-legal in certain regions, the R9 fills a crucial gap in Yamaha’s lineup.

The teaser gives us a few hints about what’s to come: a glimpse of an LED headlight and a blurry blue sportbike – likely Yamaha’s signature Racing Blue – stand out, along with a good look at the rear wheel. This gives us a taste of the design, with similarities to its naked sibling, the MT-09.

According to motorcycle.com, the R9 has already received CARB certification for 2025, sharing the same specs as the MT-09 and MT-09 SP. That means we can expect the same 890cc triple-cylinder engine, pushing out 117.3hp at 10,000rpm and 93Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. Colour options, confirmed through the certification, include blue, black, and white.

The design indeed shares some DNA with the MT-09, particularly the frame and exhaust, but with some sportbike-specific tweaks. The headlight, for example, looks like an evolution of Yamaha’s LED setup, with two strips surrounding a central light.

The images shown are for illustration purposes.

Expected to compete in the Supersport racing class, the R9’s 890cc engine may require some changes to existing regulations. There’s also speculation about a higher-spec R9M model, similar to the YZF-R1M, but we’ll have to wait for more details.

For Malaysian riders, the MT-09 has been a favourite for almost a decade. With Yamaha Malaysia lacking a strong sports bike in its lineup, the YZF-R9’s arrival couldn’t be more timely.

While the full feature list is still under wraps, we’re anticipating traction control, riding modes, and a quickshifter to be standard. As we approach October 9, we’re likely to see a few more teasers, but one thing is certain – the YZF-R9 is ready to make its mark on the roads.
