This week, the Qatar Airways Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix roared into action with a spectacular parade from San Remo to the iconic Phillip Island Circuit, marking the much-anticipated return of MotoGP to Australia.
Leading the parade was local hero Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), alongside Joan Mir (Repsol Honda Team) and fellow Australians Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP), Joel Kelso (BOE Motorsport), and Jacob Roulstone (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3).
The event also honoured a very special guest: five-time MotoGP 500 world champion Mick Doohan, who celebrated the 30th anniversary of his first world title. Doohan is set to perform a Lap of Honour on Sunday, a nostalgic moment that cements his enduring popularity with Australian fans.
The festivities kicked off with interviews in San Remo before the riders took a scenic route across the island to the Phillip Island Circuit. Upon arriving, the riders completed a lap of the legendary track, followed by a final photo op, much to the delight of the fans.
In addition to Doohan’s historic presence, modern MotoGP stars like Italy’s Francesco Bagnaia, Spain’s Joan Mir, and Ducati’s Marc Marquez also made appearances, further electrifying the atmosphere. Miller, a hometown favourite, captivated the crowd, especially students from San Remo Primary School, who were excited to meet their racing hero.
The event marks the official start of the Australian Grand Prix weekend, with free practice sessions kicking off today October 18th.
Phillip Island is a fan and rider favourite, setting the stage for Round 17 of the MotoGP season, part of a thrilling and crucial triple-header as the championship battle intensifies.
In other news, Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) has announced that he will miss the upcoming Malaysian and Valencia GPs to undergo surgery on his left shoulder. The Italian will return to Italy after the Thai GP to recover and ensure he’s in top form for the 2025 season.
