Maverick Viñales of Aprilia Racing shattered expectations and the lap record at Sachsenring on Friday, leading a remarkable day for Aprilia with a time of 1:19.622. His performance put him 0.340 seconds ahead of the competition, making a significant statement for the team.

The Chase: Jorge Martin and Miguel Oliveira

Jorge Martin of Prima Pramac Racing, the 2023 winner, showcased impressive speed throughout the day, closely trailing Viñales. Martin was not alone in his pursuit; Miguel Oliveira of Trackhouse Racing, riding another Aprilia, secured the third spot, just 0.022 seconds behind Martin. This strong showing from Oliveira emphasized Aprilia’s dominance.

A Challenging Day for Marc Marquez

For Marc Marquez of Gresini Racing MotoGP™, the day proved difficult. Marquez suffered two crashes, including a significant highside. Despite these setbacks, medical checks declared him fit to continue. His initial performance showed promise, but he ended the day outside the top ten, necessitating a Q1 appearance.

Afternoon Drama in Practice

The vital Practice session in the afternoon was eventful. Marco Bezzecchi of Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team crashed early, losing the front at Turn 11 but emerged unscathed. Marquez then experienced a highside at the same turn, initially returning to the truck before eventually visiting the medical center and being cleared.

The session’s drama continued with Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) crashing at Turn 1, damaging the air fence and prompting a red flag. Despite this, Di Giannantonio was also declared fit and returned to improve his lap times.

Crashes and Lap Records

After the session resumed, crashes continued with Takaaki Nakagami (IDEMITSU Honda LCR) and Joan Mir (Repsol Honda Team) both going down at Turn 1. As time attacks began in the last 20 minutes, the pace escalated, leading to Viñales’ record-breaking lap. Marquez did not rejoin the session, slipping further down the order into Q1.

Strong Performances Across the Field

Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) secured fourth place, demonstrating consistent pace with over 30 laps. Reigning Champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) quietly but effectively claimed fifth, just ahead of teammate Enea Bastianini, who crashed late at Turn 11 but was unharmed.

Franco Morbidelli of Prima Pramac Racing took seventh, followed by Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3), who had a fast yet challenging day with two crashes. Despite this, Acosta moved through to Q2 in eighth, with Sunday being his final chance to become the youngest premier class winner.

Fabio Di Giannantonio’s efforts landed him in ninth despite his earlier crash, while Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) completed the top ten, narrowly edging out teammate Jack Miller by 0.001 seconds. Miller, Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Racing), and Marc Marquez will head to Q1, alongside Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™).

Looking Ahead

With Aprilia leading Friday’s standings at a track traditionally dominated by Ducati, Saturday promises more excitement. Viñales’ substantial lead recalls his previous dominant performances, hinting at a potentially commanding weekend.

As the weekend unfolds, the battle between Batmav and the rest of the field intensifies. Stay tuned for more thrilling MotoGP action from Sachsenring.
