Nearly one million vehicles are expected to enter Kelantan during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, which coincide with the beginning of Ramadan, prompting authorities to step up traffic monitoring and enforcement efforts across the state.

According to Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, the overlap of the two significant festive periods is expected to cause a substantial increase in vehicle inflow compared to previous years.

“Given that Chinese New Year coincides with the start of Ramadan, vehicle inflow to Kelantan is expected to be very high, approaching one million,” he said, as reported by Harian Metro.

He explained that many Kelantanese typically return to their hometowns at the start of Ramadan to break fast with their families, further contributing to the surge in traffic.

In response, the police have launched Op Selamat, which runs from Sunday until next Friday, with a focus on accident-prone and congestion hotspots that have already been identified. Particular attention will be given to Gua Musang, where several road construction projects are still ongoing.

Additional officers will be deployed in these areas to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents.

Mohd Yusoff made the remarks during a press conference following the Monthly Assembly at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK).

Reflecting on last year’s Chinese New Year Op Selamat, he highlighted positive outcomes achieved by the state police. Based on statistics from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), total road accidents decreased from 252 cases to 228, marking a 10 per cent reduction.

More significantly, fatal accidents dropped from eight cases to three, representing a 63 per cent decrease. There were also no serious accidents or severe injuries recorded throughout the operation.

“These achievements reflect effective planning, commitment, and the proactive presence of officers on the ground,” he added.

Motorists travelling to Kelantan during the festive period are advised to plan their journeys carefully, follow traffic regulations, and remain patient on the road as authorities work to manage the expected heavy traffic volume.
