The middleweight naked segment has never been more exciting than in 2025. Two standout contenders in this class are the 2025 Yamaha MT-09 and the 2025 Kawasaki Z900 SE. On paper, both machines deliver strong performance and engaging street riding dynamics, but a closer look reveals how contrasting philosophies and equipment levels create two unique riding personalities.

The Yamaha MT-09 embraces its hyper naked heritage with aggressive styling, advanced electronics and a torque-rich triple-cylinder engine that rewards flickable handling and responsiveness. The Kawasaki Z900 SE, on the other hand, pairs its smooth inline-four power with premium suspension, refined electronics and high-end components that emphasize balance and confidence across a wide range of riding scenarios. Below, we break down how these two bikes stack up.

2025 Yamaha MT-09 vs 2025 Kawasaki Z900 SE

Engine and Performance Character

Yamaha MT-09

At the heart of the Yamaha MT-09 is an 890cc liquid-cooled, inline three-cylinder engine that produces lively power and a broad torque curve of 119 horsepower and 93 Nm of torque. Yamaha’s engine design gives the MT-09 a distinctive character, with strong mid-range pull and an addictive exhaust note that enhances the thrill of twisty rides.

This powerplant is paired with a suite of electronics including a six-axis IMU, traction control, slide control and customizable riding modes that help keep the bike planted and predictable in varying conditions. The light weight and responsive handling complement the engine’s nature, making the MT-09 feel agile and eager to turn in.

Kawasaki Z900 SE

The Kawasaki Z900 SE takes a different route with a 948cc liquid-cooled inline-four engine that delivers a smooth and linear power delivery. With a peak output of around 123 horsepower and 98 Nm of torque, the Z900 SE provides robust performance capable of carving through corners or cruising on highways with confidence.

Kawasaki’s electronics package, including traction control, selectable power modes, and a six-axis IMU with cornering management functions, supports rider control without overwhelming complexity. The engine’s refinement and balance make it ideal for riders who appreciate a predictable yet satisfying discharge of power.

Features and Equipment Level

Yamaha MT-09

Feature sets are one of the areas where these two bikes clearly differ. Yamaha has equipped the MT-09 with a comprehensive electronics suite starting from the IMU-based systems that support traction, slide and lift management, all adjustable through configurable ride modes. The updated full-colour TFT display integrates connectivity with smartphones and navigation, giving riders modern convenience alongside performance. Brembo braking components and a refined chassis help reinforce its dynamic nature.

Kawasaki Z900 SE

Kawasaki’s Z900 SE also arrives well-endowed, but with a slightly different focus. Its premium specification includes fully-adjustable 41mm inverted forks and an Öhlins S46 gas-charged rear shock, providing enhanced compliance and stability. Brembo M4.32 radial-mount calipers add strong stopping power, while the 5-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity via the Rideology app keeps riders connected. Electronic cruise control further improves long-distance comfort, a feature not always found in this class. The Z900 SE blends sportiness with premium ride comfort and usability, appealing to riders who want performance without sacrificing refinement.

Ergonomics, Comfort, and Riding Feel

Yamaha MT-09

Ergonomics play a big role when comparing these two bikes. The MT-09 carries a slightly more aggressive stance with a forward-leaning position that enhances corner engagement. Its lighter chassis and nimble handling make it feel lively in urban traffic and twisty roads alike. Riders often describe the MT-09 as fun and responsive, with quick steering and a feel that invites playfulness.

Kawasaki Z900 SE

In contrast, the Z900 SE offers a somewhat more balanced riding position. Its ergonomics lean toward comfort for longer rides while keeping sporty intentions intact. The premium suspension and chassis setup contribute to confidence at speed and on uneven pavement, making it feel planted and composed. This doesn’t mean it’s dull, it is far from it, but the Z900 SE places a bit more emphasis on overall refinement and comfort than pure aggression.

Verdict: Different Souls, Same Class

Choosing between the Yamaha MT-09 and Kawasaki Z900 SE isn’t simply about numbers. The MT-09 offers a more playful and dynamic character with its torque-rich triple engine and agile chassis, making it ideal for riders who love responsive handling and an engaging street experience. The Z900 SE brings premium refinement and balanced performance, with advanced suspension and thoughtful comfort features that suit both daily riding and spirited weekend runs.

Both bikes are serious contenders in the 900cc naked category, but they cater to slightly different rider personalities. If fun, agility and playful power delivery are your priority, the MT-09 may win your heart. If you lean toward refinement, comfort and a polished all-around package, the Z900 SE could be the better match. Which one you choose ultimately comes down to how you plan to ride and the kind of character you want from your naked machine.
