This weekend, Augusto Fernández will make his return to MotoGP action as a wild-card entry for the Yamaha Racing MotoGP Test Team at Round 20 of the 2025 MotoGP World Championship, taking place at the Sepang International Circuit. The Spanish rider’s mission is clear; to continue gathering vital data on Yamaha’s highly anticipated V4-powered prototype, testing its performance and reliability under full Grand Prix conditions.

Yamaha officially confirmed Fernández’s participation, emphasizing that this wild-card entry is part of its ongoing development programme for the V4 engine, which made its debut test at Misano in September. Fernández and the Yamaha Test Team will utilize every available track session in Malaysia to refine the bike’s setup, improve feedback, and accelerate progress ahead of the 2026 season.

The 2022 Moto2 World Champion, Fernández, is no stranger to the premier class. Having competed full-time in MotoGP from 2023 to 2024, he has already joined Yamaha’s test squad as a wild-card rider three times this year at Aragon, Brno, and Misano with the latter marking his first outing on the V4 machine. The Spaniard heads to Sepang highly motivated, a circuit where he previously secured a career-best fourth place in Moto2 (2022) and 10th place in MotoGP (2024).

“The GP in Misano feels like a long time ago, so I’m really happy to be back racing,” said Fernández. “We’re continuing to improve the V4 prototype and gather data to make it ready for next season. I missed riding this bike, and I’m excited to see how it performs here in Sepang. It will be a challenging weekend, but our goal remains development.”

The Sepang International Circuit, a 5.5km layout with a mix of slow, medium, and high-speed corners, has been a MotoGP staple since 1999. Known for its demanding tropical heat and long straights, the main one stretching 920 meters, the track will test both man and machine to their limits.

As Yamaha’s development push continues, Fernández’s appearance at Sepang shows a crucial step in the brand’s transition into a new era of performance and engineering excellence, one built around the next-generation V4-powered MotoGP machine.
