Italy Seeks Glory at 99th 6DAYS FIM Enduro in Bergamo

As anticipation builds for the ninety-ninth edition of the 6DAYS® FIM Enduro of Nations, the spotlight turns to Bergamo, Italy – the host city for this year’s prestigious event. Marking the twelfth time Italy welcomes the world’s longest-running off-road motorcycling competition, the 2025 edition promises a thrilling celebration of endurance, heritage, and national pride.

Established in 1913, the 6DAYS® – formerly known as the International Six Days Trial (ISDT) – has only been interrupted by two world wars and the global pandemic, making it one of motorsport’s most enduring legacies. Italy’s relationship with the event dates back to 1931 when the nation hosted the race for the first time in Merano, South Tyrol. That same year, the Italian team of Rosolino Grana, Luigi Gilera, Gino Zanchetta, and Miro Maffeis earned their second consecutive World Trophy win on home soil after debuting triumphantly in France the year prior.

However, that golden beginning was followed by a prolonged drought – Italy went without a World Trophy win for nearly half a century, despite hosting the event multiple times between 1948 and 1974. It wasn’t until the 1979 edition in West Germany that the Italians climbed back to the top step of the podium, igniting a golden era throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

During those decades, Italy emerged as a powerhouse, claiming nine World Trophy titles and four Junior World Trophy (Silver Vase) victories. Memorable home-soil triumphs included a triple crown win in Isola d’Elba (1981), a clean sweep in San Pellegrino (1986), and again in Brescia (1997). A victory in Spain in 2000 marked their last dominant run before a new challenge emerged.

In the two decades since, Italian victories became harder to come by. While campaigns in Slovakia (2005) and Chile (2007) brought glory, the home round in Sardinia (2013) left the team with only a third-place finish. After years of disappointment, the tide finally turned in 2021 when the postponed Lombardy edition – held under the shadow of COVID – became the stage for Italy’s remarkable comeback.

With Andrea Verona, Davide Guarneri, Thomas Oldrati, and Matteo Cavallo leading the charge, the team clinched Italy’s fifteenth World Trophy title, backed by a roaring home crowd. The Junior World Trophy team also celebrated success, securing their fourteenth title – and followed up with a fifteenth the next year.

Now, as the 6DAYS® FIM Enduro of Nations returns once again to Italian soil from 24 to 29 August in Bergamo, the nation looks to build on its storied legacy. Led once more by the experienced and ever-determined Andrea Verona, Italy will be aiming for their sixteenth World Trophy win – a fitting achievement for the 99th running of this iconic race.
