Francesco Bagnaia’s reign as MotoGP champion came to an emotional end in Barcelona, where he concluded the 2024 season as vice-champion behind Jorge Martín.
After the final race at the GP Solidarity in Barcelona, the Italian symbolically removed the #1 sticker from his Ducati fairings in the team’s garage, placing it on his chest in a heartfelt gesture. Ducati monumentalized the moment on social media, writing, “Still a Number 1 in all Ducatistis’ hearts!”
With the championship crown passing to Martín, Bagnaia is set to revert to his iconic #63 for the 2025 season. The coveted #1 now belongs to Martín, who secured his maiden MotoGP world title with a commanding campaign riding for the Pramac Ducati team.
While Martín had not immediately confirmed whether he would adopt the #1 for the upcoming season, the number is reserved exclusively for him as the reigning champion.
Ducati Team Manager reflected on the tradition of carrying the #1 in MotoGP, expressing his belief that Martín would embrace the honour. “If you win the title, you want to wear the number one—it’s a special privilege, something that doesn’t come around every day,” he shared with TNT Sports.
Martín’s championship win marked a major milestone, with Ducati taking pride in the achievement, despite his impending move to Aprilia for 2025. “Even if Jorge takes the number one with him, it will always be linked to Ducati,” the manager remarked. “The record books will say, ‘Jorge Martín – Ducati.’ The number is for the rider, but the triumph belongs to the machine as well.”
As Ducati looks ahead to reclaim the championship in 2026, Bagnaia’s return to #63 signals a fresh chapter for the Italian, who will seek redemption in the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Martín’s decision to adopt the #1 will carry the legacy of his title-winning season as he embarks on a new journey with Aprilia.
For now, Ducati bids farewell to a remarkable season filled with highs and challenges, determined to bring the #1 back to Bologna in the near future.
