World Superbike Championship stars Toprak Razgatlioglu and Jonathan Rea will not be racing at the Cremona Circuit in Italy this weekend, with both riders taking time to recover from recent injuries. The decision was made to allow them to fully heal before returning to action in the championship.

Razgatlioglu, currently leading the championship standings and representing the ROKiT BMW Motorrad team, suffered a crash during Free Practice 2 at the French round in Magny-Cours, resulting in a mild traumatic pneumothorax.

Toprak, the current championship leader, experienced a crash during the previous round in France and will be unable to compete at Cremona.

Although his injury is not deemed severe, Razgatlioglu and his team have opted to sit out the Cremona race to ensure a full recovery. The Turkish rider, also known as “El Turco,” is now aiming to return at the Aragon Round, a week after Cremona.

Toprak explained, “I would have loved to be back on track in Cremona, but the recovery of the mild pneumothorax is taking longer than I initially hoped. It’s important that I make a full recovery, and my goal now is to return on my BMW M 1000 RR at the next race weekend at MotorLand Aragon.”

Markus Reiterberger, a German rider with prior experience in WorldSBK, will step in to race for the BMW team in Toprak’s absence.

Rea will be sidelined for the Italian Round and will be replaced by Niccolò Canepa, the 2007 STK1000 champion.

Meanwhile, six-time champion Jonathan Rea, now riding for Yamaha, will also miss the Cremona race. Rea is recovering from surgery following an injury sustained in a previous round. He had shown promising form on the Yamaha R1, particularly in mixed conditions in France, but his recovery process is still ongoing.

Rea commented on Instagram, “I’m disappointed having to sit out this weekend in Cremona. After speaking with Dr Antonie Martens and Dr Michael McBride, they both insisted that my thumb injury needs more time to heal. I am doing everything to be back at 100% as soon as possible.”

Canepa recently announced his retirement from the world of motorsport.

Yamaha has called up Niccolo Canepa, a seasoned rider in WorldSBK and the Endurance World Championship, to replace Rea for the Italian round. Canepa, who recently announced his retirement, expressed his pride at getting the chance to race once more. “I am really sorry for what happened to Jonathan, but I am thankful to Yamaha for this opportunity. It’s always great to race for this team.”

As fans look forward to the replacements stepping in at Cremona, many are hopeful that both Razgatlioglu and Rea will make a full recovery and rejoin the fight for the WorldSBK title soon.
