Renting electric scooters or bikes has become increasingly common in the Klang Valley, especially in bustling communities.

Now, there’s a new option for city commuters: electric motorbikes. Tryke, a Malaysian startup, has launched the country’s first shared electric motorbike rental service.

For those unfamiliar with Tryke, the startup is dedicated to enhancing urban mobility by offering “The Best Mile”—a solution that combines cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

Since its launch in 2019, Tryke has aimed to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce air pollution, and lower living costs by providing a variety of shared mobility options tailored to different travel needs.

With a growing fleet of over 700 electric vehicles, including scooters, bicycles, and now motorbikes, Tryke operates across Melaka, Selangor, Putrajaya, and Kuala Lumpur. Their goal is to provide an eco-friendly alternative to car ownership for short- and medium-range trips, making urban commuting more accessible and sustainable.

The electric motorbike rental service was officially piloted on August 15th in Cyberjaya. “We are currently using the EBixon BOLD Electric Motorbike for this pilot phase, and this phase allows us to evaluate the business model’s viability and address any operational and technological challenges before scaling up,” Tryke representatives told iMotorbike.

To support this initiative, Tryke has partnered with EasyMotorbike Rental, a local business in Kuala Lumpur, to offer their motorbikes on Tryke’s platform via the company’s mobile app. The collaboration was made possible with the help of Asia Mobiliti, another local startup, whose IoT modules enable vehicle connectivity.

The pilot service is currently operating with 20 motorbikes between Cyberjaya and Kuala Lumpur, specifically at DPulze Shopping Centre in Cyberjaya and Robertson Serviced Residences in Kuala Lumpur. During this phase, the motorbikes will only be available in these two locations.

Regarding the expansion of the electric motorbike rental service across the Klang Valley and other regions in Malaysia, Tryke shared, “Absolutely, which is why this pilot is vital for us to understand important operational, technological, and pricing parameters before we roll this out to a larger market.”

When asked about the feedback so far, Tryke noted, “It’s early days, but we’ve seen significant interest and engagement through our marketing channels, indicating strong demand. Initial feedback highlights the service’s convenience and affordability, with users requesting more pick-up and drop-off locations.

“We are currently targeting early adopters and leisure riders but plan to cater to daily commuters as we expand.”

For those interested, Tryke is offering a 50% discount on daily passes at just RM35 to celebrate their launch, available until Malaysia Day on the 16th of September.

Getting started: Download the Tryke app, verify your account, and you’re ready to ride. Helmets are available at the customer service counter for a deposit of RM50.
