In a stunning debut on European soil, Yamaha’s Levi Townley has made history. The 14-year-old New Zealander is the first bLU cRU YZ Cup rider to win a Junior Motocross World Title. He clinched the 85cc title at the 2024 Junior Motocross World Championship in Heerde, The Netherlands. Townley’s performance was exceptional, despite challenging conditions.
The Kamperweg Heerde circuit featured deep Dutch sand. Townley showcased his talent with two impressive races. His journey to the title included a race win and a third-place finish.
Race One: Dominance and Precision
Townley’s campaign began with a dynamite start. He emerged from the first turn in second place, right behind Austrian Moritz Ernecker. Drawing on race craft from his father, former MX2 World Champion Ben Townley, Levi executed perfectly. On lap five, he capitalized on an error by Ernecker. He surged into the lead and maintained his dominance. Townley finished the race with a 4.5-second lead over Frenchman Sleny Goyer.
Race Two: Resilience and Determination
Race Two tested Townley’s resilience and determination. After a mid-pack start, he charged through the field. He reached as high as second position. A small mistake and a tip-over on the final lap saw him drop back. Despite this, Townley quickly remounted. He powered his YZ85 to a third-place finish, securing the overall championship.
Townley’s victory is historic. He is the first New Zealander to claim a Junior Motocross World Title. His win ends Yamaha’s lengthy title wait in the 85cc class. This victory reaffirms the resurgence of the YZ85.
A Promising Future
Townley’s future looks bright. He is the first bLU cRU rider to win a Junior Motocross World Title. Adding to the excitement is his younger brother Jaggar. Jaggar also shows great promise on the track. The Townley family’s journey is far from over. After a 30-hour journey back to New Zealand, they will return to Europe. The 2024 YZ85 bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup SuperFinale is next. This event takes place at the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations in Matterley Basin, Winchester, England, from October 4-6.
Levi Townley’s triumph in Heerde is a significant moment. It is a milestone for Yamaha and New Zealand motocross. This heralds a new era of success and inspiration for young riders worldwide.
