Retired Teacher Conquers Seven Countries on Solo Scooter Expedition

Retired teacher Mohammad Lasim Deraman showcases human spirit with a 30,000 km solo motorcycle tour through seven countries.

Mohammad Lasim’s epic 4-year road expedition featured diverse terrains and challenges, guided by his trusty Yamaha NMAX 155 scooter.

In 2019, Mohammad Lasim started his journey from Kota Baru, Malaysia, traveling through six countries before returning home in June.

Challenges abounded in this expedition, with COVID-19 and adverse weather causing substantial delays and hurdles along the journey.

Aged 57, Mohammad Lasim faced pandemic-related setbacks, temporarily halting his journey in Mumbai, India, after just three months of riding.

His initial plan to bring his wife along on the trip had to be postponed indefinitely. He resumed the expedition with determination in May 2022 when international borders started reopening, returning to Mumbai for the journey.

Another setback arose as the Zojila Pass, vital for Ladakh and Kashmir connectivity, shut its doors to all vehicles.

Undeterred by these challenges, Mohammad Lasim decided to bring his Yamaha NMAX 155 back to Malaysia for a brief period.

In April the following year, he flew back to New Delhi to resume his tour. Three days before Hari Raya Aidiladha, he triumphantly reached Kelantan’s Rantau Panjang – Sungai Golok border, concluding his extraordinary journey.

This remarkable adventure was not without its trials. Facing scooter troubles, navigating perilous Indian and Nepali mountain paths, and enduring -20°C temperatures, risking acute mountain sickness.

However, amidst these setbacks, there were also unforgettable moments, particularly when navigating the perilous Zojila Pass.

At an elevation of 3,528 meters, the perilous Zojila Pass is renowned, but its stunning beauty justified Mohammad Lasim’s 3-hour journey.

A former special education teacher, his passion for long-distance motorcycle trips began in 2008, leading him to explore diverse destinations. Azman Baharuddin, an experienced traveler since 2001, hailed Mohammad Lasim’s unique feat, possibly making him the first Malaysian to achieve it.

Scooters, while popular for short city rides, face maintenance challenges on rugged terrains. Mohammad Lasim’s expedition exemplifies the human spirit and inspires audacious dreams.
