Il Dottore believes that today’s drivers have changed the style of riding by finding a technique to take turns as fast as possible, as reported on Motorsport.com:
– For me, in recent years the style of riding has changed, especially in terms of position on the bike. Now everyone leans forward, head forward, shoulders and elbows sticking out. In fact, my focus on curves and trajectories has changed. With these bikes, these tires, and these brakes, we can take turns much faster. It rides a little differently compared to five years ago.
The Petronas veteran admits that the shift could be due to improvements in aerodynamics: ‘I don’t know how much of that difference is because of aerodynamics. After all, the aerodynamics allow for more acceleration, so we ended up getting to the next corner with more speed. We have more weight on the front of the bike and that means we can train with more intensity. Also, the bike is heavier when we change direction, so we need more power. That’s what changes aerodynamics, more than riding style.’
