Honda Files Patent for an Electric Version of the Iconic Motocompo

Honda Files Patent for an Electric Version of the Iconic Motocompo

The latest reports suggest Honda might be bringing back the legendary Honda Motocompo inform of a foldable electric scooter – here is everything you need to know!

Yes, another Honda patent leak! Two days ago came across Honda’s latest electric Super Cub patent and we reported how we think Honda would roll in an electric version of the Honda Super Cub in the near future. Well, here is another patent leak that would definitely interest you!

Motocompo and the world

If you follow us frequently, you might know about Honda’s Motocompo from the 80s. With the growing technology back then, the 80s was the time manufacturers were really into experimenting. Going back in time, in the 1980s numerous quirky looking motorcycles rolled out of the production line. Aside from looking distinctive, some of the motorcycles were designed and manufactured to fulfil a purpose. Talking about form and functionality, one of the unique bikes from this era to fulfil both is the Honda Motocompo (NCZ50).

The Honda Motocompo was a foldable scooter that came as an option with the  Honda City hatchback. The car won numerous awards, however, one of the coolest thing about the car was the option to add Honda Montocompo in the trunk as a factory option.

So wondering what’s the point of the scooter at the back? Well, Japanese cities are usually congested and it’s generally hard to find parking space at times – this is where the Motocompo comes into the picture. No parking? No problem! Simply park the City wherever you can and use the foldable mini scooter from the trunk to ride to your destination. Yes, Honda played the game pretty smart to fill the gap in urban mobility. So what’s the fuss now? RideApart reports Honda Motocompo might make a return in the form of an electric foldable scooter. This is because Honda Motor Corp apparently filed a trademark for the name “Motocompacto” on July 23rd 2020. Well, the name isn’t exactly Motocompo but it’s pretty close to the old name and of course, adding “Compact” in the name is beneficial to the folks in current marketing.

Aside from this, Honda registered the trademark in the “land vehicles, namely, electric scooters” class. This means if Honda does roll out the new “Motocompacto”; it would definitely be electric and not petrol-powered like the old Motocompo. Given Honda already gave a preview of an electric version of the Motocompo back in 2011 at the Tokyo Motor show (just like the EV-Cub), the chances of Motocompo making a return as an electric scooter is highly likely. Although we can’t guarantee at this point, we will just have to wait and see what Honda surprises us with.
