The MotoGP grid welcomes back Pol Espargaro this weekend at Balaton Park, Hungary, as the experienced Spaniard steps in for the injured Maverick Viñales. The Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider continues to recover from surgery on his left shoulder, leaving Espargaro to carry the baton for the team for the second time this season.
Espargaro’s Return to Racing Form
At 34, Espargaro is no stranger to the demands of the premier class. A Red Bull KTM test rider and multiple Grand Prix winner, he has already proven his competitiveness this year. At the Czechia Grand Prix, he secured 9th position in both the Sprint and main race at Brno, showcasing sharp race pace despite his primary role being development.
Adding to his advantage, Espargaro recently completed a private test at Balaton Park, giving him valuable insight into the new Hungarian venue before this weekend’s debut event. Now in his 12th MotoGP season, Espargaro’s experience and adaptability will be key assets.
Espargaro: Balancing Test Duty with Race Mode
Speaking ahead of the weekend, Espargaro acknowledged the challenges of shifting mindset from testing to racing:
“It’s tough for Maverick to miss another race but we saw in Austria that he needs more time for recovery and it’s important to think about MotoGP when you are 100%. I know this only too well! … Right now we focus on Hungary and it’s not easy to change the test rider ‘chip’ for the MotoGP rider ‘chip’, with the level the category has right now and with the pace the others have. … I’m happy to be able to help out the team and the factory again by racing this weekend.”
His words highlight both his respect for Viñales’ efforts and his own readiness to step back into competitive action.
Aki Ajo: “Pol Brings Experience and Value”
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager Aki Ajo praised the Spaniard’s contribution to the project, both on and off track:
“Unfortunately Maverick was not ready to make the whole GP weekend in Red Bull Ring but it was positive that we could see where he is with his recovery and we know he’ll soon be back at 100%. In the meantime, we are very lucky to have a rider and a person like Pol in our structure that can step in to help and made a strong contribution. It’s important for our development, not only for the results at the track.”
Ajo stressed that Espargaro’s role goes beyond points and positions, underlining his importance to KTM’s long-term progress.
Balaton Awaits: Experience Meets New Ground
With MotoGP returning to Hungary for the first time since 1992, and Balaton Park making its championship debut, Espargaro’s test laps at the venue could give him an edge over rivals. For KTM, the weekend represents both a chance to gather valuable data and to continue building momentum in the second half of the season.
