BMW M1000RR Dominates Podium as Heavy Rain Disrupts Weekend and Cancels Main Race.

The 56th Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix concluded with a familiar sight: an all-BMW podium, as the BMW M 1000 RR once again demonstrated its supremacy on the challenging Guia Circuit. However, the event unfolded under less-than-ideal circumstances, with torrential rain derailing the weekend’s plans and forcing the cancellation of the main race.

With the narrow street circuit rendered unrideable due to persistent downpours, the victory trophies were awarded based on qualifying results, crowning Davey Todd as the winner, followed by Erno Kostamo and Peter Hickman.

BMW Riders Set the Stage in Macau

The BMW contingent arrived in Macau with high hopes. FHO Racing BMW Motorrad fielded a formidable lineup, including Davey Todd, Peter Hickman, nine-time Macau winner Michael Rutter, and Craig Neve.

Meanwhile, Erno Kostamo, the 2022 champion, represented Team 38 Motorsport by Penz13 Racing. With seven BMW riders on the grid, the team appeared well-prepared to tackle the Guia Circuit’s unique challenges.

Heavy rain delayed the schedule, limiting track time until Saturday. Despite the disruptions, BMW riders dominated qualifying, securing the top four spots. Todd claimed pole position with a time of 2:25.563, followed by Kostamo (2:25.820), Hickman (2:26.155), and Rutter (2:28.115).

Weather Forces Race Cancellation

Sunday’s persistent rain ultimately left the circuit unsafe for racing, leading to the decision to cancel the event. As a result, the podium was determined based on Saturday’s qualifying results, with Todd taking the win and the trophy for the fastest lap.

Reflecting on the unusual circumstances, Todd expressed both disappointment and satisfaction. “This year’s Macau Grand Prix has been hectic from start to finish. It’s a shame about the weather, but it’s out of everyone’s control. To qualify on pole, which turned out to be the win, is pretty cool. It’s great to deliver this result for the FHO Racing BMW Motorrad team.”

Peter Hickman, who secured third, echoed the sentiment. “It’s been one of those weekends where everything worked against us. I’m not really a qualifying person—I always look forward to the race. But it wasn’t to be this year. At least I’ve completed my Macau trophy set with bronze, silver, and gold!”

BMW’s Continued Dominance

Despite the challenging conditions, the 2024 Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix reaffirmed BMW’s dominance on the Guia Circuit. With their riders consistently setting the pace, the BMW M 1000 RR remains the bike to beat on this iconic stage.

While this year’s event was a washout, the teams and riders are already looking ahead, hoping for clearer skies and a proper showdown in 2025.
