The cancellation of the Austrian Trial has resulted in Toni Bou claiming the ultimate title for the 2020 season.
Due to the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak, which has been confirmed by the World Health Organisation as a pandemic, the 2020 X-Trial World Championship in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, is cancelled. As such, Repsol Honda Team rider Toni Bou mathematically clinches the ultimate victory as he sits on top of the championship standings. Bou seals his indoor title tally to 14 and 27 overall titles (indoor and outdoor).
The measures for the containment of Covid-19, Coronavirus, have been applied to several European countries including Italy, France and even Austria. As such, there is no choice but for the cancellation of the penultimate race. Bou has accumulated a total of 100 points (25 more than his second-placed rival). Thus he has automatically claimed the X-Trial Championship title.
Bou has never failed to win the event since 2007. This would be his fourteenth indoor title and 27th overall.
The final trial will take place in Andorra la Vella, Andorra, on April 25th.
Toni Bou (Repsol Honda Team)- As It Happened
“It is a pity that this decision had to be taken to postpone the Austrian trial due to the Coronavirus. But I understand that everyone’s safety the first and foremost issue. The sensations, in this case, are strange, because I would have preferred to win the title during a competition. This year we have had a great season. I showed myself to be at a high level. We have won all five trials. We also would have arrived at Wiener Neustadt with a great possibility to take the title there. Anyway, there is still one final trial before we finish the championship. I hope to celebrate it definitively in Andorra. I am confident that I can give the show that the Coronavirus prevented us from putting on in Austria,” says Bou as quoted from Honda Racing Corporation.
