Lithuanian plans to do The Coldest Ride in Siberia

Lithuanian plans to do The Coldest Ride in Siberia

In Southeast Asia we’re not used to extreme cold temperatures, but other riders have to deal with it in a daily basis. That’s what’s happening in Siberia, where temperatures are usually below zero degrees Celsius. But, even with these temperatures, one fearless Lithuanian rider plans to complete The Coldest Ride, a journey across Siberia that’s happening as we write this article.

Karolis Mieliauskas, 36-years of age, will ride his Yamaha Tenere 660 across Siberia, with the goal to reach the coldest inhabited place on Earth. He began his adventure in his home country Lithuania, before crossing the border to Russia, where he took a 6-hours flight to Yakutsk. From there, he and his Tenere 660 will travel on what’s known as “The Road of Bones”.

At the start of the adventure in Yakutsk, Karolis Mieliauskas encountered temperatures of -40ºC (!), and along the 1000 km frozen ride, he will then face even colder temperatures until he eventually reaches Oymyakon, the coldest inhabited place on Earth, where temperatures will dip to -60ºC during the day.

The unpaved roads he will face on The Road of Bones means that if the trails aren’t frozen, they’ll be filled with mud, presenting a different challenge that will test the limits of Karolis Mieliauskas. Those who’ve tried to complete The Road of Bones say that it’s better to ride there during the Winter, when temperatures go well below zero degrees, than having to face the muddy trails and strong winds.

The Coldest Ride in Siberia is an incredible adventure, and we can’t wait to hear from Karolis Mieliauskas when he completes the journey.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
