Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn. Bhd. (MODENAS), a subsidiary of the DRB-HICOM Group, has partnered with GIATMARA Malaysia to launch the MODENAS Service Plus centre at GIATMARA Prima Melor in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

The newly established facility will serve as a dedicated service centre for the maintenance of MODENAS MEV-1 electric motorcycles used by Pos Malaysia for its delivery operations, while also providing GIATMARA trainees and technical personnel with hands-on experience servicing electric motorcycles under real commercial operating conditions.

The launch ceremony was officiated by Datuk Zulfikri Osman, Director-General of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), and attended by Ts. Ahmad Hamdi Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of GIATMARA Malaysia, as well as Roslan Roskan, Chief Executive Officer of MODENAS, together with representatives from MARA, GIATMARA and Pos Malaysia.

Speaking during the launch, Roslan said: “Introducing electric motorcycles is only one part of the journey. It must also be supported by trained technicians, suitable facilities and dependable servicing capabilities.”

“This partnership between MODENAS and GIATMARA will not only cater to the maintenance needs of Pos Malaysia’s MEV-1 fleet, but more importantly creates opportunities for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in EV servicing skills that will become increasingly important as electric mobility continues to grow,” he added.

Established in January 2024, GIATMARA Prima Melor currently offers seven technical training programmes, including Automotive Technology, Motorcycle Technology and Electric Motorcycle Technology. To date, the institution has produced 878 graduates, consisting of 294 full-time trainees and 584 participants from short-term programmes, while also helping develop 82 entrepreneurs through business support initiatives.

The collaboration will not stop in Kelantan. MODENAS and GIATMARA confirmed that three additional MODENAS Service Plus centres will be established at GIATMARA facilities in Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak to support the servicing requirements of Pos Malaysia’s growing electric motorcycle fleet across those states.

Under the partnership, MODENAS will provide technical training, service procedures, operating standards and continuous technical support, while GIATMARA contributes trained technicians, workshop facilities and operational resources.

The service programme covers scheduled maintenance, vehicle diagnostics, safety inspections, corrective repairs and technical support, giving GIATMARA trainees valuable exposure to commercial workshop operations, industry service standards and EV maintenance procedures.

Roslan also stated that: “The value of this programme lies in applying technical knowledge to motorcycles used in day-to-day commercial operations, where quality, safety and response time are critical. It brings TVET closer to industry needs while helping develop skilled talent for Malaysia’s growing electric mobility sector.”

As part of the collaboration, GIATMARA instructors also underwent specialised training at the MODENAS Learning Centre in Gurun, Kedah, covering product knowledge, maintenance procedures, troubleshooting techniques and practical vehicle familiarisation.

The latest initiative builds upon the MODENAS-GIATMARA partnership established in 2023, which initially focused on technical training, technology transfer and the establishment of the Industrial Centre of Excellence (ICoE) for Motorcycle Technology at GIATMARA Pendang.

With the launch of MODENAS Service Plus at GIATMARA Prima Melor, both organisations are taking the next step in expanding Malaysia’s EV after-sales ecosystem while preparing a new generation of technicians to support the country’s growing electric mobility industry.
