Motorcyclists crossing into Singapore will soon experience a faster way through immigration, as facial recognition replaces fingerprint scanning at land checkpoints.
Starting March 31, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) will roll out the system at automated motorcycle lanes in Woodlands Checkpoint. It will first cover 18 lanes before expanding to all 70, with plans to introduce it at Tuas Checkpoint later in the year.
Under the new process, riders scan their passport or a QR code via the MyICA app, lift their helmet visor, and look at a camera for identity verification. Once confirmed, they are cleared to pass, no fingerprint needed.
The system is available to residents, long-term pass holders, and returning visitors with existing records. First-time travellers will still go through manual checks before gaining access to automated clearance on future trips.
ICA says the move aims to improve traffic flow and reduce waiting times at busy crossings. Travellers are still required to carry their passports, as checks may be conducted when necessary.
