BMW Motorrad has made headlines after one of its R18 Transcontinental motorcycles sold for a staggering €130,000 (approximately RM736,000) at an RM Sotheby’s auction. This is almost four times its standard showroom price of around RM194,000. The record-breaking sale happened not because of rare components or a special edition tag, but because Pope Francis himself signed the motorcycle.

The Pope’s Blessing

The signing took place at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, where Pope Francis autographed the R18 Transcontinental, turning it into an instant collector’s item. BMW confirmed that it will donate 100% of the auction proceeds to children’s aid projects. Thus, reflecting the charitable spirit of the event.

The motorcycle’s sale underlines how a gesture of compassion can transform even a machine known for power and precision into a symbol of generosity and hope.

The R18 Transcontinental: Classic Power Meets Modern Comfort

Beyond its spiritual significance, the R18 Transcontinental remains one of BMW’s most luxurious touring motorcycles. The bike is powered by a 1,800 cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin engine. It is capable of delivering 91 hp and 158 Nm of torque, offering smooth, effortless cruising performance.

Key features include:

  • 10.25-inch TFT colour display with integrated navigation and Bluetooth connectivity
  • Advanced rider assistance and electronic controls for long-distance comfort
  • Signature retro styling inspired by BMW’s heritage roadsters

A Ride for a Cause

While this particular R18 Transcontinental won’t likely see the open road again, it represents a powerful story where craftsmanship meets compassion. Through BMW’s initiative and the Pope’s gesture, a motorcycle became more than just a machine. It became a vehicle for goodwill and global charity.
