Pirelli has officially begun its preparations to take over as MotoGP’s exclusive tire supplier from 2027 according to rideapart.com, completing a closed test session at Misano on Tuesday that included a sprint race simulation and early compound evaluations.

The switch marks the end of Michelin’s tenure, which began in 2016, and will coincide with one of the most significant technical overhauls in MotoGP history. From 2027, premier class machines will see engine displacement cut from 1000cc to 850cc, reduced aerodynamic aids, the removal of ride-height and launch control devices, and a smaller fuel tank, among other changes.

With so many variables set to change, tire development becomes a critical piece of the puzzle. Teams ran one bike each, with only official test riders on duty: Augusto Fernandez for Yamaha, Dani Pedrosa for KTM, Takaaki Nakagami for Honda, Lorenzo Savadori for Aprilia, and Michele Pirro for Ducati.

For the session, ride-height devices were deactivated and, in some cases, power and aero packages were adjusted to mimic the new regulations. Pirelli’s motorcycle racing director Giorgio Barbier described the day as a success:

“The test took place according to the run plan, which also included a sprint race simulation. The first feedback received is very encouraging – this test has generated a lot of data to be analyzed in order to continue our development work of the MotoGP tires. The most appreciated features are definitely grip, warm-up speed and confidence.”

According to Motorsport.com, teams were allocated seven tire sets at Misano (Two front options and three rear variants) as Pirelli began fine-tuning compounds for the unique demands of MotoGP.

While rider impressions remain under wraps, the initial signals suggest that Pirelli’s entry into MotoGP is off to a promising start. With major regulation changes looming, the coming months will be crucial in shaping how the Italian brand’s tires influence racing when the new era begins in 2027.hear from the test riders about how their new Italian tires held up during the test session.
