The first 24km stretch links Sungai Long to Ampang, expected to cut travel time between Ampang and Kajang to 20 minutes.

The first section of the East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) officially opened on 30th August (Saturday), offering a long-awaited alternative route between Sungai Long and Ampang. The new highway is seen as a vital part of easing congestion in the Klang Valley, especially for daily commuters travelling between Ampang, Kajang, and Cheras.
At the launch officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, it was announced that motorists will enjoy a toll-free period of 30 days, beginning from 6am on 30 August until 11.59pm on 29 September 2025.
Stretching 24km, Section One of the EKVE is built as a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction, featuring four interchanges (Sungai Long, Bandar Mahkota Cheras, Hulu Langat, and Ampang), four toll plazas, and two lay-bys. The expressway also forms part of the Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road (KLORR), a major infrastructure project designed to divert traffic away from central Kuala Lumpur and reduce congestion.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who was also present at the launch, said the new stretch would shorten travel time between Ampang and Kajang to just 20 minutes. He added that Section Two, which will connect the route directly to Ukay Perdana, is already under construction. Once completed, the project will finalise the 39km EKVE alignment as originally planned.
Anwar urged the Works Ministry and highway concessionaires to speed up the remaining construction works, stressing the urgency of tackling congestion in the Klang Valley.
“Congestion has already reached its peak. In Kuala Lumpur and surrounding cities, traffic jams are severe, so these highway projects must be accelerated and kept on schedule,” he said.
The opening of the EKVE is expected to provide immediate relief to heavily congested routes, while Section Two will further enhance connectivity upon completion.
