McLaren’s Lando Norris may be locked in one of the fiercest Formula 1 title battles of his career, but his racing dreams began far from the glamour of grand prix circuits. Speaking at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the 25-year-old revealed that his first love was not Formula 1 but motorcycle racing.

A Childhood Built on Dirt and Speed

Norris admitted that before he ever tuned into Formula 1, he was captivated by motocross and dirt bikes. “You know what, I would love to do motorbike stuff. That’s actually where I started,” he said on stage.

His early days included horse riding, which he “hated,” followed by quad biking—until his father sold the quad, claiming it had been stolen, because it was too dangerous. That left motocross, which quickly became Norris’s passion.

“I loved dirt motorsport—motorbikes, motocross, quad bikes. I loved all of that before I ever watched Formula 1, before I ever saw road racing. For me, buggies and desert stuff, I was like ‘this is the coolest stuff in the world.’ My hero was Valentino Rossi.”

The admission adds a new layer to Norris’s backstory, showing how close he once came to pursuing a very different path in motorsport.

Eyes on the 2025 Title Fight

Fast forward to today, Norris sits second in the Formula 1 drivers’ standings, just nine points behind his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. The pair are fighting not only for McLaren’s resurgence but also for their maiden world championship titles.

Reflecting on the season so far with RACER, Norris emphasised how experience has shaped him into a more complete driver.

“Nothing makes my life feel different, it’s just your preparedness for this moment, for this battle,” he explained. “From a racing side, I’ve learned a lot of things. With more experience, you just deal with more situations, understand your team better, and they understand you better. Naturally, you’re more prepared.”

Becoming a Complete Driver

Norris stressed that preparation is only one part of the equation; the other is raw ability. “You’re more prepared, but the second part is actually being a better driver. Can you actually drive the car quicker? Can you save the tyres in a better way? Those are the harder things. But also, especially for Oscar, in his third year of Formula 1, a lot of that just comes with experience.”

The Briton, now in his seventh season in F1, believes he has reached a turning point. “I feel now more like the most complete driver I’ve ever been. I feel like I’m ready to tackle more challenges. It doesn’t make things easier, you’re still racing the best drivers in the world, but being prepared allows you to show more of your potential.”

The Road Ahead

As the 2025 season heads into its decisive second half, Norris is balancing his boyhood passion for two wheels with the reality of chasing glory on four. While his hero Rossi conquered the world of MotoGP, Norris has his sights firmly on Formula 1’s biggest prize.

And if his reflections in Riyadh are anything to go by, the same fearless spirit that once drew him to motocross may now be what fuels him to reach the pinnacle of F1.
