Billy Joel to Auction Beloved Motorcycle Collection

Music legend Billy Joel is auctioning his 75-plus motorcycle collection and closing his Long Island shop after a Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus diagnosis forced him to cancel his tour.

Legendary American singer-songwriter Billy Joel will part with his prized motorcycle collection later this year after being diagnosed with a rare brain condition that has forced him to cancel his upcoming tour, his management confirmed on Wednesday.

In May, the 76-year-old “Piano Man” cancelled a string of UK concerts and a packed U.S. tour that was going to run from July 2025 through July 2026. The decision came after doctors diagnosed him with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition that occurs when cerebrospinal fluid cannot flow properly through the brain and spinal cord. The build-up of fluid creates pressure that can cause brain damage, impair memory, and affect movement.

Joel has previously said the condition, exacerbated by years of performing, has led to hearing, vision, and balance issues. Johns Hopkins Medicine describes NPH as rare but potentially treatable.

He houses his vast collection of more than 75 motorcycles, many dating back to the 1940s, at 20th Century Cycles in Oyster Bay, Long Island, a shop he opened to the public free of charge on weekends. Known for his love of classic bikes, Joel once said in a promotional video, “I like the older style.”

The shop will close when its lease expires in late September, and he will auction the motorcycles. Joel’s passion for riding has shaped his career, from taking Christie Brinkley for a spin in the “Uptown Girl” music video to singing about riding “a motorcycle in the rain” in his hit You May Be Right.

The auction will mark the end of an era for the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, whose musical legacy spans five decades and includes hits such as We Didn’t Start the Fire, New York State of Mind, and Just the Way You Are.
