Looking for a daily ride that’s easy to live with but still gives you that little kick when the road opens up? Let me introduce you to the Modenas Kawasaki Z250 ABS, a bike that balances weekday practicality with weekend fun in a pretty slick-looking package.

This model first dropped in 2019 after Kawasaki officially teamed up with Modenas through Edaran Modenas Sdn Bhd (EMOS). Since then, it’s been one of the notable CKD (locally assembled) machines coming out of Gurun, Kedah. The Z250 ABS is basically the naked sibling to the Ninja 250, but with its own personality, raw, edgy, and just a bit more streetwise.

The Engine & That Sugomi Swagger

Underneath all the aggressive styling is a 249cc DOHC parallel twin engine, the same one we saw in the 2018 version. It pumps out a healthy 29hp and 23.5Nm of torque. Not bad for a bike in this class. You also get a 6-speed gearbox, and yes, it comes with assist and slipper clutch, which means smoother shifts and less wrist fatigue in traffic or when riding hard.

Kawasaki kept that Sugomi design language alive in the Z250 ABS, and it shows. The bike looks mean, especially from the front with its dual LED headlamps that resemble the bigger Z models like the Z900. It’s got that “get out of my way” attitude with sharp lines, muscular tank, and a raised tail section that completes the sporty look. Definitely one of the better-looking 250cc naked bikes on the street.

And the LEDs aren’t just for show, they’re bright, energy-efficient, and offer wide coverage. If you’re riding at night or in heavy rain, you’ll be glad those lights are on your side.

Cockpit Vibes & Rider Comfort

Hop on and you’re greeted with a semi-digital dash, classic Kawasaki style. You’ve got an analogue-style tachometer (redlining at 12,000 rpm) paired with a digital display showing speed, gear indicator, odo, and all the standard info you’d expect. If you’ve ever ridden a Z650 or Z900, this layout will feel familiar.

Ergonomically, it’s chill. The upright position gives you a comfy ride, especially in city traffic. The seat height sits at just 785mm, so it’s super accessible even for shorter riders. At just 165kg, it’s light and nimble, which makes it easy to weave through tight roads or parking spots. Even beginners will feel at home pretty quickly on this machine. Longer rides? You might feel some fatigue eventually, but nothing a quick coffee stop can’t fix.

Handling, Brakes & Riding Experience

This bike handles well, no question. The trellis frame (inspired by the mighty Ninja H2) helps keep things stiff but light, and you can feel that when cornering. Whether you’re filtering through KL traffic or taking a twisty detour, it feels planted and stable.

Then there’s the braking, a standout feature. Up front, you’ve got a big 310mm disc with Nissin calipers, and the bite is solid. ABS is standard, which gives you peace of mind especially in sketchy weather. Whether you’re panic-braking or just rolling to a smooth stop, the Z250 handles it like a pro.

Final Thoughts – Worth It?

At RM20,800, it is much more affordable thanks to its well built CKD. But here’s the thing, that smooth and refined twin-cylinder engine alone makes a big difference. It’s calm when you need it to be, but rev it up and it rewards you with character and performance that most bikes in its class can’t match. So, whether you’re commuting, learning to ride properly, or just looking for a stylish second bike, the Z250 ABS is definitely a solid pick. Reliable, well-built, and still carries that Kawasaki DNA.
