2025 was supposed to start slow for Spain’s motorcycle market. After all, dealers were busy clearing out old stock from last year’s mad rush of self-registrations. But surprisingly, things held up pretty well — the first three months closed with 47,750 bikes sold, down just 0.5% from last year. And with March already showing a strong +7.1% rebound, the year is looking better than expected.

Spain’s Economy: Better Than You Might Think

The global economy feels a bit shaky right now (thanks to the flip-flopping Trump strategies), but Spain is managing pretty well. The economy is expected to grow by 1.9% in 2025, mainly because people are still spending, and the job market is holding strong.

There’s also good news on inflation — it’s cooling off — and Spain’s government deficit is shrinking faster than expected. The national debt is slowly coming down too, forecasted to dip to 104.8% of GDP this year. All signs point toward Spain having a relatively steady year, barring any big surprises.

What’s New with Euro 5+ Rules?

2025 brought in the new Euro 5+ emissions standard for motorcycles. The actual pollution limits didn’t change, but now brands have to prove that their bikes can keep emissions low over time — not just when they’re shiny and new. Plus, tougher noise testing rules kicked in too (under UNECE R41.05), even though the noise limits stayed the same.

Long story short: manufacturers had to hustle at the end of 2024 to register bikes before the new rules hit, which explains the sales spike back then. But despite that, the market’s proving to be pretty resilient so far this year.

Spain’s Motorcycle Market: Still One of Europe’s Biggest

Spain holds its spot as the fifth-largest motorcycle market in Europe, right behind Turkey, Italy, France, and Germany.

Last year was huge — sales jumped 9.9% to hit 234,456 units, the best numbers Spain has seen in 15 years. December 2024 was especially wild, with self-registrations shooting up 75.8% as brands rushed to beat the Euro 5+ deadline.

Everyone expected a slow hangover period in early 2025, but after a sluggish January and February, March came through with a nice lift. Electric motorcycles are helping too — sales in the EV segment are up 17.4% already this year.

Who’s Winning (and Losing) in 2025?

• Honda is still king, growing 7.1% so far this year, thanks to hits like the PCX 125 and NSS 125 Forza.
• Yamaha is feeling the heat, slipping 8.2% after a massive growth year in 2024.
• The real headline? Zontes, the Chinese brand, exploded by 119%! They’ve been growing fast since 2020 and now proudly sit in third place.
• BMW had a solid start too, climbing 7.4%.
• Another Chinese brand, Voge, is also making big waves with a 44.9% jump in sales.
