Aprilia Racing’s Jorge Martin endured a painful return to MotoGP action at the Qatar Grand Prix, with medical scans confirming fractures to the right posterior ribs following a high-speed crash on Lap 14. The reigning World Champion was immediately transported to the hospital where doctors diagnosed a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) requiring drainage treatment.

Initial examinations revealed chest trauma and rib contusions, with subsequent CT scans showing worsening pneumothorax that necessitated emergency intervention. Aprilia Racing confirmed Martin will remain hospitalized for observation until the lung condition stabilizes. This latest setback compounds a difficult start to Martin’s title defence after missing the opening rounds due to preseason injuries.

Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola shifted focus from on-track performance to Martin’s wellbeing: “Our thoughts are entirely with Jorge during this difficult period. While our race results weren’t ideal, the human element takes absolute priority right now.”

Teammate Marco Bezzecchi salvaged points with a hard-fought ninth place after starting 13th, noting: “We improved stability but sacrificed some power. The progress is small but real – we need patience during this development phase.”

The severity of Martin’s injuries casts doubt on his participation in the upcoming round, with Aprilia stating they will “follow medical advice carefully” regarding his return. This marks the second significant injury for Martin in 2025 after his preseason training accident.

As the paddock moves to Europe, attention remains on the Spanish rider’s condition, with the championship facing the potential absence of its defending titleholder for consecutive rounds. Bezzecchi now carries Aprilia’s hopes alone as the team balances competitive demands with their star rider’s rehabilitation.
