Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) began its 2025 MotoGP campaign with a private testing session last week at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit. The session also marked the debut of Takaaki Nakagami in his new role as a test rider for Honda.

After seven years of competing with LCR Honda in MotoGP, the 32-year-old Japanese rider now takes on the critical responsibility of aiding in the development of the Honda RC213V. Nakagami joins forces with veteran test rider Stefan Bradl and experienced MotoGP competitor Aleix Espargaró in Honda’s push to regain its competitiveness.

During the tests, Nakagami piloted a stealthy, carbon-finished version of the RC213V designed specifically for technical assessments. The absence of the bike’s usual livery reflected Honda’s urgency to make strides after several mundane results and seasons.

Honda’s struggles have been evident, particularly during the final official test in Barcelona in November. There, Johann Zarco, Honda’s top rider, finished 0.8 seconds behind Alex Marquez on a Ducati, emphasizing the need for significant upgrades to the RC213V.

The departure of eight-time world champion Marc Marquez at the end of the 2023 season further underlined the challenges facing the Japanese manufacturer.

As reported by PaddockGP, the Sepang test focused on improving several key areas, including chassis configurations, aerodynamics, and engine performance. The objective was to gather comprehensive data ahead of the official MotoGP tests, also set to take place in February 2025 at Sepang.

Nakagami expressed his optimism after the session, sharing on social media: “Sepang test completed. The best way to end the season. Now let’s rest a little and continue working. See you soon.”

The private tests are viewed as a critical step for Honda as it strives to close the gap with leading manufacturers like Ducati and KTM. Armed with valuable insights from the Sepang tests, HRC engineers remain confident in their ability to make the RC213V more competitive.

The official MotoGP tests in February will provide a crucial opportunity to measure Honda’s progress as it aims for a strong comeback in the 2025 season.
